The Loyola University Maryland men's and women's tennis teams each earned home victories against Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon at the McClure Tennis Center.
The Greyhound men defeated the Crusaders, 4-2, using strong doubles play and clutch singles victories at the bottom of the lineup. Loyola secured the doubles point with wins at the top two positions, as Nick Lawliss and Ryan Gill defeated Patrick Ling and Luke Prokopis, 6-4, at No. 1, followed by Louis Moldenhauer and Petter Hagen posting a 6-4 win over Teddy Callery and Matt Carlson at No. 2. Holy Cross earned its doubles win at No. 3 behind Will Donnelly and Aayush Jhaveri, who defeated Cyrus Shivkumar and Dylan Koziol, 6-4.
In singles play, Holy Cross picked up victories at the top of the order, with Ezequiel de la Plaza defeating Hagen, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 and Carlson topping Moldenhauer, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2. Loyola responded at No. 3, where Gill rallied past Callery, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3. The Greyhounds clinched the match with consecutive wins at the bottom of the lineup, as Lawliss earned a 6-1, 6-2 decision over Ling at No. 5 and Trevor Coonerty closed scoring with a 7-5, 6-0 victory against Camilo Illanes at No. 6. The No. 4 singles match between Blake Edwards and Jhaveri was left unfinished with Jhaveri leading, 7-6 (6), 5-4.
On the women's side, Loyola earned a 4-0 victory after sweeping the doubles point and winning the first three completed singles matches. Christine Richiez and Emma Roeck opened doubles play with a 7-5 win against Phoebe Devine and Margaret Winiecki at No. 1, while Emi Shivkumar and Elena Hartley followed with a 6-2 victory over Alison Lynn and Ashley Zilora at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles match between Liza Tankimovich and Victoria Epps and Maddie Hamm and Hannah Flynn was discontinued with the score tied at 5-5.
Singles competition began with Richiez earning a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Devine at No. 1. Hartley followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win against Flynn at No. 2, before Mia Matriccino clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Winiecki at No. 3. Remaining matches were halted after the team result was decided, with Epps leading Hamm, 6-4, 3-2, at No. 4, Roeck tied with Zilora, 1-1, at No. 5, and Tankimovich holding a 1-0 lead over Mia Romo at No. 6.
