Women's Soccer Battles to Opening Game Draw at Home

BALTIMORE — Katie Ormerod scored in the 27th minute, and the Loyola University Maryland women's soccer team rallied from an early deficit to earn a 1-1 draw against William & Mary on Wednesday at Ridley Athletic Complex.

Loyola showed resilience after William & Mary struck first, with Mia Abbey finding the net in the 25th minute. The Greyhounds responded just two minutes later when Ormerod finished a feed from Betzael Contreras to level the match at 1-1.

The goal was an immediate answer from Loyola, which generated four corner kicks in the opening half and finished the match with an 8-3 advantage in corners.

Neither team could find a go-ahead goal in the second half, but Loyola's defense and goalkeeper Hannah Goetzer kept the Greyhounds level. Goetzer played all 90 minutes and made three saves, including a pair of stops on William & Mary's Mia Abbey.

Loyola continued to pressure the Tribe late, earning three corner kicks during the final 10 minutes. Reagan Mallia also had a second-half shot blocked as the Greyhounds looked for the decisive goal.

The Greyhounds finished with three shots, including two on target, while William & Mary had seven shots and four on goal.

Loyola opens the season with a 0-0-1 record, as they will host the 10th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks on Sunday evening.
