BALTIMORE — Savannah Manset scored early, and goalkeeper Hannah Goetzer made six saves as Loyola University Maryland battled Iowa State to a 1-1 draw Thursday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Greyhounds (0-1-6) struck just 4 minutes, 5 seconds into the match when Manset found the back of the net for her first goal of the season. Ella Moss assisted on the play, giving Loyola an early 1-0 advantage.
Iowa State (4-2-2) answered just 19 seconds later when Sophie Forrester scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Makenna Marshall.
The quick exchange of goals proved to be the only scoring of the night as both defenses settled in.
Loyola generated several opportunities throughout the match, putting four of its nine shots on target. Reagan Mallia and Taryn Buckley each forced saves in the second half, while Manset had a shot blocked after halftime.
Goetzer was particularly strong in the second half, recording five of her six saves after the break. She denied Iowa State's Izabella Tejeda in the 54th minute and stopped Forrester in the 60th and 67th minutes before making late saves on Breezie Brewer and Cassidy Corcione.
The Cyclones finished with an 18-9 advantage in shots and held 57% possession, but Loyola's defensive effort kept Iowa State from finding a go-ahead goal.
The Greyhounds also earned two corner kicks in the final 15 minutes, creating additional pressure as they looked for a winning goal.
Despite being outshot, Loyola held Iowa State scoreless for the final 85 minutes.
Loyola returns home on Sunday, as they will face James Madison.
