2022 (Graduate Student): Returns for his fifth year with the Greyhounds after graduating in May 2021 with his Bachelor of Arts in communication.
 
2021 (Senior): Closed the season with a terrific stretch between the pipes to help propel the Greyhounds to the NCAA Quarterfinals… Had 13 saves in a win over Georgetown in the regular-season finale and then made nine against Navy in the Patriot League Quarterfinal… Tallied 12 versus Army West Point in the semifinal and then made 16 versus Denver in the NCAA First Round… That total included one at point-blank range with less than three seconds on the clock to preserve the win in regulation… Made a career-high 17 saves and allowed only 10 goals in the NCAA Quarterfinal against Duke… Opened the year with 10 saves against both Richmond and Virginia… Had 12 in the win at Navy.

2020 (Junior): Stepped into a start role for the Greyhounds, playing to an 8.65 goals against average and a .571 saves percentage in six games... Saw almost 321 minutes of action before the season was cut short... Made his first collegiate start at Virginia and made 15 saves... Equalied that number while allowing only seven goals against Johns Hopkins... Had nine saves against both Rutgers and Lafayette... Named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

2019 (Sophomore): Saw action in two games between the pipes, combining for almost 18 minutes of action with only two goals allowed (6.77 goals-against average) against Colgate and Lehigh… Posted five saves on the six shots on goal he faced against the Raiders… Had a .750 saves percentage during the season.

2018 (Freshman): Made his collegiate debut against Lafayette (2/24)… Had one save and allowed a goal against the Leopards.

Before Loyola: Graduated from Trinity-Pawling School in Pawling, New York, where he was a five-time letterwinner… Earned three letters in lacrosse and two in cross country… Named the Pride’s defensive most valuable player as a senior in 2017… Helped Trinity-Palwing finish as Founders League runners-up in 2016… Played club lacrosse for Eclipse Lacrosse Club.

Personal: Samuel Chapman Shafer… Son of Merrill and Tom Shafer… Has an older brother, Thomas.. Mother, Merrill, played field hockey and lacrosse at Saint Lawrence, and his father, Tom, was a baseball player at Denison.
