Baltimore, Md. - Looking to build off its first win of the season, the Loyola men's lacrosse team returns to conference action when hosts St. John's at Diane Geppi-Aikens field this Saturday. The Greyhounds play the Red Storm for the first time since 1989 and bring a 4-0 series record into the contest. Faceoff is at 1 p.m.
Both Loyola and St. John's picked up non-conference wins this week with the Greyhounds defeating Wagner 13-7 and St. John's downing Hartford 9-4. Loyola was led by senior Matt Monfett's four goals while both freshman Shane Koppens and sophomore Greg Leonard scored two goals in the win.
Monfett, who also added an assist against Wagner, reached 100 career points with his even-man goal at 9:32 of the fourth quarter. He enters Saturday's game with 60 goals and 40 assists in his collegiate career.
The Greyhounds also shared the ball on Tuesday, posting a season-high eight assists to give the team 21 points. Steven Hess, who picked up six groundballs on the day, now leads the team with 16 groundballs this season. Goalie Michael Fretwell made four saves before being relieved by Trae Rodgers and Jeff Russell won 12-of-14 faceoffs to improve his season win percentage to 62.
Saturday's game will pit two ECAC squads that need a conference win. Both Loyola and St. John's are 0-1 in league play this season. The Greyhounds, who have outscored opponents 37-36 this season, are 1-3 overall while St. John's is 2-3.
