Women's Tennis Falls In MAAC Semifinals

April 23, 2005

Jersey City, N.J. - Mother Nature forced the MAAC Championships off of the U.S. Open courts in Flushing, N.Y. and into Saint Peter's College's indoor courts on Saturday afternoon. The Loyola women, in a shortened match, fell 4-0 to top-seeded Marist in the semifinals while the men's consolation was cancelled all-together.

"We played a very competitive match," says Loyola Head Coach Rick McClure. "I'm very proud of the way we played today."

The Greyhounds took the doubles point to three sets with Claire Najour and Stefanie Clay winning the at No. 3 doubles, 8-6. The Red Foxes won all three singles matches, but it wasn't easy.

Amy Nitch fell in a grueling 7-5, 7-5 match at No. 1 while Jessica Liberatore fell 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2. Marist completed the sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 straight set win over Clay at No. 3.

The Loyola men, which fell to Niagara in Friday's first round, did not compete in the consolation bracket due to the inclement weather.
