Syracuse Gets Past Men's Lacrosse, 12-6

April 1, 2006

Box Score

Syracuse, N.Y. - In the absence of leading scorer Patrick Kennedy, junior Dan Bauers stepped up with two goals, but it wasn't nearly enough to topple 13th-ranked Syracuse at the Carrier Dome on Saturday afternoon. The Orange used 4-0 scoring runs to close out the second and third quarters and win 12-6.

The Loyola defense, which has allowed two or fewer first-quarter goals in six of its seven games this season, held the Orange to two goals in the first stanza. Scoring off its first and only man-up opportunity of the quarter, the Greyhounds trailed 2-1 thanks to Dan Bauers' 10th goal of the season.

The Orange increased their lead to 3-1 with a man-up goal of their own, but after a Syracuse penalty for too many men on the field, the Greyhounds were able to once again convert on the extra-man. Running the same play that worked in the first quarter, Bauers took the feed from Andrew Spack and shot low, cutting the Orange lead to one goal.

The second quarter, however, belonged to Syracuse. The Orange outshot Loyola 17-7 and scored five goals to take a 7-2 lead into the halftime lockeroom. The Greyhounds stopped Syracuse's run of four unanswered goals to close the half with a 20-yard strike from Spack to start the third quarter.

The `Hounds further cut into the lead and trailed 7-4 when junior Cory Coffman found classmate Greg Leonard, who sent home his third goal of the season at the 9:19 mark of the third. SU's quick strike offense scored three times in the next five minutes and built a 10-4 lead it would not relinquish.

Senior goalie Michael Fretwell, who registered 10 saves in the first half, finished the game with 13 saves. The Loyola man-up offense, ranked fifth in the country before the game, ended the day successful on 2-of-4 opportunities.

Loyola is now 3-4 overall and 2-1 in the ECAC. Syracuse, behind four goals from Mike Leveille, ends a four-game losing streak and avoids its first-ever three-game losing streak in the Carrier Dome.

The Greyhounds return to action next Saturday, hosting Rutgers at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. The game, Loyola's first home contest in over a month, will be televised on ABC-2 and ESPNU.
