BALTIMORE, Md. - Freshman Melanie Mitchell finished seventh in the javelin throw to lead the Greyhound women's track and field team at the TCNJ Lions Invite on Saturday afternoon, completing a busy weekend for Loyola. The Greyhounds also had two entries in the Penn Relays Carnival on Thursday and Saturday.

Mitchell completed a throw of 32.74 meters to finish seventh in the event for Loyola. She also finished in 16th place in the shot put, recording a distance of 9.26 meters.

Sophomore Allison Riley led the Greyhounds in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:31.12, which was good for 21st place. She was one of three Loyola runners to place in the top 30 as Katie Guglielmo and Shannon Gillespie finished in 25th and 27th places, respectively. "Our halfmilers are really starting to break out and have the kind of races I knew they were capable of," Coach Julie Culley said.

Freshman Maureen Wynne finished in 17th place in the 1500 meter run, turning in a season-best time of 5:00.50. Bethany Gentry competed in the event as well, crossing the finish line in a time of 5:17.43.

Meanwhile, the Greyhounds also had a pair of entries at the prestigious Penn Relays Carnival. On Thursday night, junior Andrea Rovegno ran a season-best time of 17:22.12 in the 5000 meter run, marking the second consecutive year she has qualified to run at the meet. "Andrea is hard-working and incredibly dedicated to the sport," Culley said. "She desires to be the best and her training reflects that."

Rovegno was also part of the school's first-ever relay team to qualify for the Penn Relays as the 4x800 meter squad set a school record with a time of 9:37.74. "To qualify and run so well in front of thousands of spectators was outstanding," Culley said. "I hope this will start a long-standing tradition of qualifiers to the Penn Relays."

The Greyhounds will compete in the 2006 MAAC Championships this weekend, which will be held at Rider University.
