Annapolis, Md. - Freshmen Caitlin Cassidy and Matthew Fralinger shined in their college swimming debuts at Navy on Saturday afternoon. The Greyhounds, who swam against Catholic, George Washington and host Navy, saw first-place finishes from their freshmen in the official season opener.
The men defeated Catholic 247-41 and defeated George Washington 204-87, while falling to Navy 194-101. The women also posted wins over Catholic and George Washington with 243-61 and 185-110 scores respectively. Navy defeated the women 160-129.
The depth of our team was really on display today with strong victories over George Washington and Cahtolic," says Loyola Head Coach Brian Loeffler. "I thought we really held our own against Navy as well, the most talented team we will swim all season. The men's victory in the 200 Medley Relay was outstanding."
In individual action, however, Cassidy won the 100 Back in a school record time of 1:08.59, ahead of teammate Melissa White, who placed third in the event in 1:09.39. Cassidy also placed third in the 100 Free with a 1:01.94, and set a school record in the 100 Fly with a time of 1:07.14.
The Loyola women also claimed the 200 Free Relay with Tori Kamauff, Sarah Birkenmeier, Kim Krzaczek and Megan Royer tapping in at 1:54.87. Kamauff won the 200 IM (2:30.34), placed second in the 200 Back (2:27.22) and third in the 200 Free (2:11.16) to cap an excellent day in the pool. Her times in both the 200 Back and 200 Free were Loyola meter's school records.
Royer and Krzaczek also had Top 3 finishes in individual events with Royer's 28.04 in the 50 Free and Krzaczek's 1:18.77 in the 100 Breast. Senior Megen Hadley placed second in the 800 Free (9:39.6) and third in the 400 Free (4:47.17), while Meaghan McCotter took third in the 800 Free to wrap up Loyola's Top 3 individuals in women's action.
On the men's side, Fralinger won the 100 Breast with a school record time of 1:06.74, and teamed up with Sam McQuaid, Ozzy Torres and Brad Reeser to win the 200 Medley Relay in 1:47.24. The Greyhounds also won the 200 Free Relay with E.J. Verrico, Jon Wertz, Jacob Drannan and Reeser swimming a 1:36.43.
The `Hounds produces similar results in the 50 and 100 Free events with Reeser and Torres taking second and third in each event. Reeser swam a 24.58 in the 50 Free and 53.43 in the 100 Free, while Torres times were 24.61 and 53.85. Reeser's time in the 100 Free also set a Loyola meter's record.
"Although we don't swim meters meets that often, it's impressive anytime you can come out and set 11 school records," added Coach Loeffler. "Especially only four weeks into the season."
Torres also placed second in the 100 Fly with a time of 58.78, while freshman Tim Rowe earned two third-place finishes with a time of 1:00.24 in the 100 Fly and a time of 2:15.87 in the 200 Fly.
The Greyhounds return to the pool next Saturday at Providence. The swim the Friars at 11 a.m.
