Offense Carries Greyhounds To 17-10 Win Over Hobart

April 28, 2007

Box Score

Baltimore, Md. - Junior Shane Koppens scored three goals and added two assists to lead Loyola past Hobart on Saturday afternoon at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field. The Greyhounds, playing their final home game of the regular season, got the offense going early and often in a 17-10 sendoff on Senior Day.

"I told the guys to go out there and make a play for your seniors," says Loyola Head Coach Charley Toomey. "I think our guys came out with a lot of heart and hustled for the ball. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way we played today."

Hobart took the early lead and held a 2-1 advantage when senior Dan Bauers took a feed from Joe Landry and knotted the game at 2-2 with 8:26 on the first quarter clock. Senior Dan Kallaugher won the ensuing face-off, picked up one of his game-high seven groundballs, and found Bauers for a score only six second after his first.

The goal, scored at 8:20 of the first quarter, gave Loyola a 3-2 lead, and the Greyhounds never looked back. After back-to-back tallies from senior Patrick Kennedy, Kallaugher won another face-off, only this time raced downfield to score himself.

Loyola scored a season-high six goals in the first quarter, eclipsing last week's five goals against Fairfield. The `Hounds matched that total with a season-high six goals in the second-quarter, again eclipsing last week's five goals against Fairfield. With two goals from Bauers, two goals from Kennedy, two goals from Koppens, two goals from senior Ryan Rabidou, and two goals from senior Andrew Spack, Loyola led 12-4 at the half.

The Greyhounds build their biggest lead at 15-5 with a goal from sophomore Jake Willcox at 11:38 of the third quarter and finished the game with 49 shots compared to 29 for Hobart.

Senior Carter Perry scored his first career goal in the win, while senior Greg Leonard added a goal and two assists on Senior Day. Kallaugher, the nation's fourth-ranked face-off man, won 18-of-29 face-offs to move his win percentage to .626 this season.

Sophomore goalie Alex Peaty played three quarter and made six saves. Goalie Connor Locke played the fourth quarter, making three saves for Loyola.

The Greyhounds improve to 7-4 overall and finish the conference season with a 5-2 ECAC record. The league win guarantees Loyola a second-place finish in the conference for the second straight year.

"We're pretty close," says Coach Toomey. "Our goal is to be a playoff team and right now we're pretty close."

Loyola closes the regular season next Saturday at rival Johns Hopkins. Game time from Homewood Field is slated for 1 p.m.
