Tennis Sweeps St. Francis To Remain Unbeaten On The Year

Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men's and women's tennis teams defeated St. Francis (Pa.) in head-to-head competition on Sunday afternoon in Loretto to remain unbeaten on the year. The women captured a 7-0 victory to up their season record to 2-0, while the men won 4-3 to improve to 3-0 on the year.

The Loyola men were able to obtain an early lead with a sweep in doubles play. Senior Scott Gannon and sophomore Tim Koch won 8-5 at No. 1 doubles, while freshmen Matt McDaniel and Jamie Russo rallied from a 6-4 deficit to win 8-6 at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles match was also won by Loyola with sophomores Peter Edgar and Chris Langley claiming an 8-6 win.

In the match of the day, Gannon was edged out in a grueling 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) match at No. 1 singles. The Greyhounds responded with Koch's 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 and Langley's 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5. The Loyola victory, however, was sealed with McDaniel's 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles. McDaniel rallied from a 6-4 deficit in the second set to claim the Loyola victory.

The women's sweep began with a sweep in doubles competition, where sophomores Caitlyn Day and Stephanie Dunn teamed up to win 8-1 at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Kerri Swan and freshman Joy Johnson duplicated the effort with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles to clinch the point for Loyola.

Day went on to win 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Dunn captured the No. 4 singles match (6-1, 6-3) in straight sets. Swan cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles, Johnson won at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-1) while senior Meaghan McKenna and freshman Andie Keyser- Baker completed the sweep with points at Nos. 5 and 6 singles.

The Loyola men are back in action on October 13-14 at the Hampton Roads Collegiate in Norfolk, Va., while the women return to the courts on Saturday and Sunday at the Bucknell Invitational.
