Baltimore, Md. - The Loyola men's and women's swimming and diving teams began this season's competition with their annual Green vs. Grey Meet at the Mangione Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon. The women swam to a 146-146 tie, while the Grey Men edged out the Green Men in the intra-squad bout.
"Today was a great start to the season," says Loyola Head Coach Brian Loeffler. "Our large freshman class has really improved our team's strength. We had 5 ECAC qualifying times today, all done by freshmen."
Those ECAC qualifiers included Ozzy Torres, who swam a 53.16 in the 100 Fly and Tim Rowe, who registered a 54.47 in the event. Freshman Matthew Fralinger posted an ECAC qualifying time of 59.89 in the 100 Breast, while Caitlin Cassidy had a very impressive day in the pool with qualifying times in the 100 Back (1:00.09) and 100 Fly (59.29).
Both of Cassidy's times catapult her into Loyola's Top 5 Times list and give her the school record in the 100 Fly. Her top times made the women's competition extremely close. Sophomore Megan Royer, who finished strong to touch out the Green Team, secured the tie in the last relay of the day.
On the men's side, Torres and Fralinger also posted Top 5 times in their wins in the 100 Fly and 100 Breast respectively. Sophomore Zachary Oster also won multiple events with first-place showings in the 500 Free and 200 IM.
On the boards, Alex Coletta had an excellent day with wins on the 1-and 3-meter events, while freshman James O'Neill and senior Richard Gibbons went head-to-head in men's diving.
"The green and grey meet is a good way to open the season on parent weekend," added Coach Loeffler. "We had a great turn out by the parents, friends and roommates and I hope the strong support in the stands continues."
The Greyhounds swim Navy, George Washington and Catholic in two weeks in Annapolis to officially open the 2007-08 season.
