Tennis Splits Against St. Francis (N.Y.) On Saturday

Baltimore, Md. - Loyola men's and women's tennis split Saturday's results in match play against St. Francis (N.Y.) The women increase the season record to 5-1 with the 6-1 victory on Loyola's courts. The men's team fell 4-3 on day, although they fought hard in singles action.

St. Francis won the doubles point for the men's team play, but Loyola had one winner in the No. 3 spot with sophomores Rob Mattison and Patrick Glaessner (8-3).

Mattison also played in a two-hour singles match at the No. 3 spot. He won the first set, 6-2 before falling 4-6 in the second to force a tie-breaker game in which he took the final match victory with a 6-3 score. Glaessner also played a long match at No. 5 singles, starting with a 5-7 loss in the first set and a quick 6-0 win in the second set, before falling 4-6 in the tie-breaker.

Junior Tim Koch played at No. 4 for a straight-set 6-0, 6-0 victory and freshman Chet Milot also won his No. 6 singles match in a tie-breaker decision, 6-4.

Freshman Keyan Sanai lost a tough match at No. 1 singles, 0-6, 2-6 and freshman J. Pierce Norton also had the same fate at the number two spot, losing 2-6, 4-6 on Saturday.

On the women's side, Loyola swept the doubles point starting with sophomores Lane Maloney and Jackie Lionetta and a win at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Freshmen Liz Black and Rachel Bergeron won 8-0 at No. 2 doubles and Ashleigh Torchiana and Elisha Connell beat their opponents at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.

The Greyhound women had five straight-set winners in singles play. Dana Verona won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2, Black won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and Lionetta won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Bergeron won at No. 5, 6-0, 6-0 and finally Torchiana won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

Maloney had a tough match at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 3-6 to force a third set 10 point tie-breaker. She fell 6-10 in the final set, but the women's team came away with the overall victory.
