BALTIMORE - The Greyhounds had the game all tied up with just three minutes to go in the second half against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Fairfield, Sunday afternoon. But for the second time this season, the Stags pulled through in the late minutes and overtook the `Hounds 63-58.
Loyola shot just 35.1 percent from the field and an even lower 31.3 percent in the second half, as the Greyhounds (9-12, 4-5 MAAC) dropped their fourth straight game, and just their second game this season at Reitz Arena.
Erica DiClemente and Miriam McKenzie led the `Hounds with 13 points each. DiClemente led on the boards for the `Hounds as well with seven. Kaitlin Grant added nine and Meredith Tolley eight.
The Stags' Desiree Pina had a game-high 16. Katelyn Linney added 12 and Tara Flaherty scored 10. Stephanie Geehan led the game with 10 rebounds.
The Stags managed to control the game almost from the very start. Loyola remained close throughout the game but was always behind by just a handful of points. Fairfield was never able to take a commanding lead, as the `Hounds were always close behind, but inconsistent shooting proved to be the downfall, as Loyola failed to overcome that margin.
Late runs by Loyola in both halves put pressure on the Stags. In the first half, the `Hounds went on a 10-2 run in the last four minutes. Loyola trailed by just two points, 28-26 at halftime.
Late in the game, the Greyhounds made one final push. A layup and a free throw by McKenzie with 6:24 left in the game was the start of a 9-0 run. Grant then added two with a short jumper from the paint, putting them down 51-47. A clutch steal by Sheahin resulted in a layup by McKenzie that tied put the Greyhounds back by just two. At 3:42, Sheahin grabbed another steal and took it down for a fastbreak layup, tying the game at 51-51 with just a little more than three minutes left, but Joelle Nawrocki took back the lead for the Stags with a short jumper from the paint.
Nowrocki's charity shot effectively regained control of the game for the Stags, and allowed Fairfield to finish off Loyola.
The Greyhounds continue their home weekend Monday night, with a 7 p.m., MAAC matchup against Saint Peter's.
