BALTIMORE - The Loyola University Maryland women's basketball team used a strong second half to pull away from Saint Peter's University en route to a, 56-47, victory Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena.
Nicole Krusen led the Greyhounds (6-7, 1-1 MAAC) with 12 points, nine coming in the first five minutes of regulation. Katie Sheahin chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.
Trailing by six at the beginning of the second half, Loyola used a pair of Kara Marshall free throws to cut into the deficit, while Krusen sunk her fourth three of the night minutes later to put the Greyhounds down by one.
Sheahin tied the score, 27-27, after a lone free throw forced by a Kaydine Bent foul.
One minute later, an Alyssa Sutherland free throw put the Greyhounds up by one.
Loyola continued the momentum, as a bounce pass from Sutherland to Sheahin capped off an 8-0 run for the Greyhounds.
Saint Peter's would counter with a 6-0 run, but a Nneka Offodile jumper from the left side helped build momentum for the Greyhounds.
Antonia Smith of Saint Peter's tied the score, 44-44, with less than four minutes remaining, but a clutch three by rookie Tiffany Padgett put the Greyhounds in the lead for the remainder of the game.
The Peacocks (0-13, 0-2 MAAC) were carried by Kristal Edwards, who notched 17 points. Aziza May drew even on rebounds and points with eight a piece.
Edwards scored 13 of her 17 points in the first half, helping the Peacock's to a 31 percent from the floor. The Greyhounds came out strong in the second half, holding Saint Peter's to only 26 percent.
Loyola began both the first and second half in similar fashion, scoring nine of its first ten points with free throws and Krusen's triple threat from downtown.
Saint Peter's sustained their largest lead of the game after a Bent jumper sent the score, 20-10, with eight and a half minutes left in the first half.
One minute later, a Sutherland steal in the paint led to a successful fast break by the senior forward. A Diana Logan three pointer capped off the ensuing 9-2 run by the Greyhounds with only three minutes left in the half.
The Greyhounds made seven of their 22 three-point attempts, while the Peacocks connected on 19 percent of their shots from behind the arc.
Junior Julie Smith recorded her first career point against the Peacocks, going 1-1 from the charity stripe.
Both teams shot in the 70th percentile from the line during the second half.
The Greyhounds travel to Marist College for another conference matchup on January 11 with a 7 p.m. tipoff.
