BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland men's basketball will play an 11-game regular-season non-conference slate prior to starting its Patriot League schedule in 2015-2016, announced G.G. Smith, the Greyhounds third-year head coach.
The Greyhounds open the season with back-to-back home games before playing five of their next six away from Reitz Arena.
Loyola opens the 2015-2016 campaign on the season's opening night, Friday, Nov. 13, against Tennessee State University. The Greyhounds will host the Tigers to close the loop on the Bracketbuster series that started in 2012-2013 when Loyola scored 15 of the game's final 17 points to pull out a two-point victory in Nashville.
Three days later, the Greyhounds renew a series with LIU Brooklyn as the Blackbirds visit Reitz Arena on Monday, Nov. 16. The teams played 16 times 1982-1989 as members of the ECAC Metro and Northeast Conferences but have not played since Loyola transitioned to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 1989-1990.
The Greyhounds will make the quick trip to Catonsville, Maryland, for a Wednesday, Nov. 18, game at UMBC before heading to Western New York for a Saturday, Nov. 21, contest at Saint Bonaventure University.
Leading into the Thanksgiving holiday, Loyola will host Stony Brook University on Tuesday, Nov. 24, and the Greyhounds then travel to Albany, New York, for a Saturday, Nov. 28, contest at Siena College.
The first day of December brings a trip to one of the most storied programs and venues in college basketball. The University of Kansas, the three time NCAA Champions and program with the most winning seasons in NCAA Division I history (97), will host the Greyhounds on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at Phog Allen Fieldhouse. The Greyhounds last played there in 2008, a season that coincided with the Jayhawks most-recent NCAA title.
Loyola returns to the State of Maryland following its date with the Jayhawks face Mount St. Mary's University in the most-played rivalry in the state's college basketball history. The Mountaineers will host Loyola in Emmitsburg, Maryland, on Saturday, Dec. 5, in the 171st meeting between the programs.
The Greyhounds then play another intra-state rival, kicking off a renewed series with Towson University on Tuesday, Dec. 8, in Reitz Arena.
Loyola will take a break of two weeks for fall semester final exams before getting back into action on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at former MAAC foe Fairfield University. The Greyhounds then play their final non-conference contest of the regular-season Sunday, Dec. 27, at Northwestern University.
The Greyhounds open their third season of competition in the Patriot League on Wednesday, Dec. 30, against American University, and the schedule wraps up with the Patriot League Championships, Thursday, March 1-Wednesday, March 9.
Prior to the start of the regular-season, Loyola will host a free exhibition game against McGill University, a perennial Canadian powerhouse and one of the world's top-25 universities, on Thursday, Nov. 5, in Reitz Arena. McGill hosted the Greyhounds in August 2014 during Loyola's five-game trip to Montreal, Quebec.
All dates are subject to change; game times, ticket and broadcast information will be announced at a later date on LoyolaGreyhounds.com.
