HAMILTON, N.Y. –
Troy Cicero Jr. made one of his three 3-pointers with 14:33 left in regulation to give Loyola University Maryland its first lead of Thursday's Patriot League Quarterfinal game at Colgate University, but the Raiders scored the next five points and held off the Greyhounds for a 90-77 victory at Cotterell Court.
Cicero hit a three from the top-left of the perimeter to give Loyola a 56-55 lead after the Greyhounds had trailed by as many as 17 in the first half.
The Raiders, however, came back to score the next five with Jalen Cox hitting two free throws and Ben Tweedy converted a 3-pointer to put Colgate up four.
Everett Barnes scored inside at 12:45 to get Loyola back within two, but Kyle Carlesimo made a three, and the Colgate lead was back to five at 12:16.
Loyola would get within three twice over the next two minutes, last with an
Emmett Adair basket in the paint, but Colgate later extended a four-point lead to 12 with a 9-1 run over 2:26.
Braeden Speed led the Greyhounds with 19 points and a career-high eight assists, while
Jordan Stiemke scored 17, Adair finished with 16 and Cicero had nine.
Tweedy scored 28 for the Raiders, while Jalen Cox scored 21 and had 11 assists.
The Raiders utilized an early streatch to go up 21-5 with 11:56 to go in the first half as Loyola had just two field goals and a free throw in the opening eight minutes.
Loyola got back within three, 41-38, on a Stiemke three at 2:14 in the first half, and it was a 46-39 Colgate lead at the break.
