FAIRFAX STATION, Va. - Despite rough racing conditions, the Loyola University Maryland rowing team collected four medals, taking first in their respective races, Sunday afternoon at the Occoquan Sprints in Sandy Run Regional Park.

Freshmen Brandon Hutchinson, Chris Wong, Erik Magnuson, Jamie Murphy and coxswain Hana You put together a strong showing in the novice four, medaling in the second heat with a time of 5:20.10.

The novice men also medaled in the petite final of the freshmen eight, as Mike Russo coxed Ryan Elliott, Nick Trautwein, Jacob Landis, Erik Magnuson, Kunle' Soniregun, Chris Rynne, Andrew Ramirez and Daniel Lecce across the finish line in 5:12.80.

Varsity rowers Coldel Reynolds and David Bjorklund teamed up for the men's pair, earning a medal with a time of 8:39.50.

The women's novice four crew of Rhys Schueren, Kristyn Rooney, Meaghan Kaiser, Mia Gioia and cox Emma Sharon outraced boats from George Mason, Mary Washington and VCU to medal with Loyola's fastest time of the day, 5:02.90.

For the first time in more than 10 years, George Mason was knocked out of the men's varsity eight final, as the Greyhounds (Victor Santiago, Joseph Yacobucci, Ryan Brown, Ryan Scott, Landis, Robert Moore, David Dukenik, Trautwein and John Dougherty) advanced and took fifth in 6:22.93.

Santiago, Scott, Brown and Dougherty raced against strong competition in the men's varsity four, taking fourth in their respective heat with a time of 5:18.96.

Both the women's novice eight (Natasha Lobo, Schueren, Stephanie Petrone, Rooney, Gioia, Samara Vallieres, Aubrey Lewis, Nikki D'Andrea and You) and varsity eight (Natasha Murray, Megan Rabenberg, Lilly Lane, Emily Mansour, Corinne Conyngham, Kaiser, Catherine Cavalari, Nona Sharp, Keenan Gibbons and coxswain Serena Rivera) advanced to the grand finals, with the Greyhounds taking fifth and sixth, respectively. The freshmen clocked a final race time of 5:47.99, while the veterans crossed the finish line in 6:32.44.

The women's varsity four qualified for the finals, but were unable to race due to extenuating circumstances.

Loyola returns to action next weekend at the Knecht Cup in West Windsor, New Jersey. Races will take place on both Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
