Quick Hits About The Hounds

  • Loyola University Maryland heads out on the road for its next two games, starting with its second-straight game against a team that leads, or is tied for the lead of the Patriot League.
  • The Greyhounds play at Bucknell University on Wednesday, Jan. 18, in a 7 p.m. tipoff.
  • Jarred Jones and Andre Walker have combined for 27 of the Greyhounds' 44 games with 10 or more points this season. Jones has posted 10 or more 14 times, Walker 13. The duo of Walker and Jones lead Loyola with 16.1 and 15.9 points per game this season.
  • Cam Gregory has averaged 11.8 points in Loyola first six Patriot League games, raising his season-long average to 7.6 points. He is shooting 72.5 percent from the field in those games, tops in the League in conference games.
  • Loyola has attempted more free throws (403) than all but one other Patriot League Team (Bucknell, 413), despite being tied for the fewest number of games played (17).
  • Loyola leads Patriot League teams and is 78th nationally in offensive rebounds per game with 12.1. Cam Gregory leads the way by averaging 2.5 offensive boards per game, while Jarred Jones is averaging 1.6.

Patriot League Network
  • For the fourth year in a row, the Patriot League Network on Campus Insiders will provide an outstanding viewing option for college basketball fans while showing more than 125 contests from Patriot League venues, including every Loyola home game.
  • Gary Lambrecht will call the play-by-play with Loyola alum Jim Chivers adding commentary.
  • In conjunction with Campus Insiders, the Network launched in 2013 and provides one of the most comprehensive digital packages of any conference nationally. Check LoyolaGreyhounds.com for links to each game.
  • Fans can watch the digital broadcasts on desktop or laptop computers, any smart phone or tablet and through a variety of connected television devices.

Series History Versus Bucknell
  • Loyola and Bucknell will meet for the 15th time on the hardwood when the teams take the floor Wednesday night in a series that the programs had played the past four years prior to Loyola joining the Patriot League in 2013-2014.
  • The Bison hold an 12-2 lead in the all-time series after winning the last seven meetings, sweeping all meetings in the years since the Greyhounds joined the League during the 2013-2014 campaign. The teams completed a four-game home-and-home series in 2012-2013, and stretch in which the visiting team defeated the home team in each meeting.
  • In last year's second meeting, Bucknell scored the final 10 points of the first half on Feb. 17 against Loyola University Maryland, and the Bison scored an 87-52 decision over the Greyhounds.
  • The Bison trailed 23-20 with 4:57 to go before intermission, but a Zach Thomas three 12 seconds later tied the score, and Chris Hass converted an and-one after scoring in the paint and drawing a foul. Hass' free throw put Bucknell up 26-23, and the Bison were up for the rest of the game. Nick Gorski scored at 4:06 for Loyola, drawing the Greyhounds (8-18, 7-8) within a point, but Nana Foulland scored 11 ticks later, starting a stretch of 10-straight points for Bucknell.
  • Four Bison players scored 10 or more points, led by Stephen Brown's 12, and Bucknell had four more who scored seven, eight or nine points. Andre Walker led Loyola with 10 points, and Cam Gregory tallied nine. Franz Rassman and Eric Laster each chipped in seven.
  • In last year's game in Baltimore, Franz Rassman, Jarred Jones and Cam Gregory combined for 40 of Loyola's 58 points in the first meeting this year, but the Greyhounds fell, 67-58, to visiting Bucknell.
  • Gregory recorded his first double-double of the season with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, while Jones and Rassman each chipped in 14 points.
  • Loyola led by a point at halftime after Rassman rebounded a Jones miss and laid it in before the first-half buzzer, putting the Greyhounds in front, 28-27. Eric Laster hit a 12-foot jumper to open the second half, and Rassman made two free throws followed by a midrange basket to push the Loyola advantage to its largest point, 34-27.
  • Ryan Frazier, however, knocked down a three for Bucknell, and Chris Hass scored from 15 feet to get the Bison within a pair at 17:45. Stephen Brown converted a layup on Bucknell's next possession, and D.J. MacLeay scored at 16:16 to put Bucknell up two, 36-34.
  • Rassman and Gregory bookended another Brown basket with Gregory's layup off an Andre Walker assist tying the game at 38-38 with 14:50 on the clock.
  • Loyola tied the game four times thereafter, but the Greyhounds could not gain a lead. After Chancellor Barnard knotted the score at 46-46 with a free throw at 9:58, Zach Thomas made a pair for the Bison to put them in the lead for good. Bucknell made 23-of-37 free throws, while the Greyhounds were 13-of-22 from the charity stripe.

Last Time Out
  • Andre Walker scored a career-high 35 points, tied the Loyola record for 3-pointers made in a game and crossed the 1,000-point plateau for his career Monday night as the Greyhounds led wire-to-wire and beat Patriot League-leading Boston University, 77-69, in Reitz Arena.
  • Walker made 9-of-12 threes in the game, tying the school record set Jan. 8, 2006, by Andre Collins against Marist College. His final three of the game came with 12-minutes, 29-seconds left in regulation and gave him an even 1,000 points in his career. He is the 35th player in school history to hit the milestone.
  • Cam Gregory and Jarred Jones both turned in double-doubles against the Terriers, who entered the game leading the conference standings.  Gregory posted 15 points and a season-high 12 rebounds, while Jones flirted with Loyola second-ever triple-double. He scored 14 and grabbed 10 rebounds while dishing out a career-best eight assists and coming up with four steals.
  • Defensively, Loyola held the Terriers to a season low 1-of-18 (5.6 percent) from 3-point range. They entered the game ranked second in the Patriot League in both 3-point percentage (36.4) and threes made per game (9.3). Boston University's overall 39.7 percent mark from the field was its lowest in six conference games this year.
  • Loyola scored the game's first four points before Cedric Hankerson made the Terriers' only three of the game 1:30 into the contest, but Walker's first three of the game pushed the Loyola lead to four, a margin it would stay at or above for the entire game. Gregory and Walker combined for 12 of Loyola's first 14 points with Gregory's steal and emphatic fast-break dunk staking the Greyhounds to a 14-3 advantage before the first timeout.
  • Threes on consecutive possession or Walker pushed the advantage to 20-5 at 14:18, but Boston University scored nine of the next 10 points to trim its deficit to seven, 21-14, on a putback layup by Justin Alston. A traditional 3-point play by Chancellor Barnard, however, put the Greyhounds back up by double digits, and they would lead 43-31 at halftime.

Walker's Outstanding Outing
  • Andre Walker entered Monday night's nationally televised game against Boston University needing to score 29 to hit 1,000 for his career. By halftime, he was only nine points away from the plateau.
  • Walker finished with a career-high 35 points, the most by a Loyola player since Jamal Barney tallied 40 on Jan. 14, 2009, against NJIT.
  • He did so by going 9-of-12 from 3-point range, tying the school record for most made 3-pointers in a game. Walker matched the mark of Andre Collins who knocked down nine on Jan. 8, 2006, against Marist College.
  • Walker's ninth three of the game came with 12:55 to play in regulation, a basket that gave him an even 1,000 points for his career. By reaching the milestone, Walker became the 35th player in school history with 1,000 or more points.

Double Double-Doubles
  • Cam Gregory and Jarred Jones both posted double-doubles on Monday night against Boston University, the first Loyola pair to do so in the same game since Dylon Cormier (25 points, 11 rebounds) and R.J. Williams (12 points, 10 assists) turned the feat against Lafayette College on Jan. 13, 2014.
  • Gregory scored 15 points and had a season-high 12 rebounds, while Jones nearly had a triple-double with 14 points, 10 boards, eight assists and four steals. Jones' eight assists set a career-high, besting his previous high of five from his freshman campaign.

Defense Key Against Terriers
  • Boston University came into Monday's game second in the Patriot League in 3-point field goal percentage (37.6) and third in overall field-goal percentage (45.0), but Loyola held the Terriers well below both marks. Boston University made just 1-of-18 from behind the arc for a season-low 5.6 percent, and overall the Terriers shot 39.7 percent.

Upping Their Games
  • Jarred Jones and Andre Walker both have increased their per-game scoring since the start of Patriot League play. Walker is averaging 19.8 points in six Leagues games, up from his season-long mark of 16.1; Jones has marks of 17.3 and 15.9.

Cam Contributing Big, Too
  • Cam Gregory has seen the biggest jump on the team of points per game in Patriot League games (11.8) versus overall (7.4). He has scored 71 of his 125 points (56.8 percent) this season in the last six games.
  • Gregory scored 13 at both American and Lehigh, and he then scored a game- and season-high 16 points at Army West Point. After posting 15 points against Boston U., Gregory has made 29 of 40 shots, good 72.5 percent from the field that leads the conference in League games. He also is Loyola's top rebounder in conference games with 45, 7.5 per game.
  • Gregory's uptick in production stretches back to Loyola's Nov. 30 win at Stony Brook when he finished with six points and 10 rebounds. In the Greyhounds' last 11 games, Gregory is averaging 9.8 points and 7.8 rebounds.

Leading When It Counts
  • Lehigh led for 39 minutes, 13 seconds of its Jan. 5 game, but Andre Walker's three with eight-tenths of a second left gave the Greyhounds the win.
  • Loyola overcame an 18-point deficit to pick up the win marking the second time this season it has bounced back after being down 15 or more. The Greyhounds trailed Binghamton University by 15 with less than eight minutes to go in regulation, but they pulled out a 90-85 overtime win on Dec. 10, 2016.
  • The 18-point deficit is the largest Loyola has come back from during the four-year tenure of Head Coach G.G. Smith. It is the largest by any Loyola team since the Greyhounds rallied from 20 down on Dec. 10, 2008, to beat Coppin State University, 73-70, in Reitz Arena.

Clutch Late
  • Andre Walker's game-winning three at Lehigh was his second game-winning basket of the season and third time he has been involved in a play that sealed a victory this year. Walker hit a winning layup with five-tenths of a second remaining at Stony Brook, giving the Greyhounds a 71-70 road win.
  • He then came up defensively at American, keeping the Eagles' Sa'eed Nelson from driving and blocking his 3-pointer at the buzzer for a two-point win.
  • Walker scored 16 of his 19 points in the final nine minutes of regulation and all of overtime at Binghamton, helping aid the comeback victory.
  • He is also 22 of 26 from the free-throw line in the final five minutes of games through 15 games this year.
  • Walker now has scored game-winning points in the last 10 seconds of games five times during his career. Last year, he scored on a drive to the basket with less than five seconds left at home against Lehigh, and he hit two free throws with just over three ticks on the clock for a win at the U.S. Military Academy. As a freshman in 2013-2014, he made two free throws with 6.9 seconds left to beat Colgate University in triple overtime.

Jones Flourishing
  • Jarred Jones has been leading the Greyhounds in scoring and rebounding from the outset this season, and after 17 games his averages stand at 15.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Those marks both are both fifth in the Patriot League.
  • After posting a season-low eight points on Nov. 18 at the University of Notre Dame, Jones has keyed a stretch in which the Greyhounds are 8-5 over 13 games. Starting with a 24-point, 11-rebound effort against Fairfield University on Nov. 23, Jones is averaging 16.9 points and 7.5 rebounds. He has scored in double-digits in 12 of the last 13 games and has posted four of his five double-doubles.
  • He has led the team, or tied for team-high honors, in scoring 11 times this year, something he has done in 10 of the last 13 games.  The fifth-year senior – Jones received a medical hardship waiver for the 2014-2015 season – also leads the blocked shots (20) and steals (28) and is second in assists (33).
  • Recently, he broke into Loyola's rebounding career top-20 and is 17th with 528. He logged his 100th career steal against Mount St. Mary's, and he is now tied for 13th all-time with 117. Jones is also fifth on the Greyhounds' career blocked shots list with 107.
  • Jones is one of only two players in school history to post 500 rebounds along with 100 steals and 100 blocked shots. Erik Etherly (2010-13) had 699, 121 and 121.
  • Entering the Bucknell game, Jones needs 27 points to become Loyola's 36th 1,000-point scorer.

The Family Business
  • Jarred Jones and his younger sister, Brionna, are both standouts for their NCAA Division I teams. Brionna leads the third-ranked University of Maryland with averages of 19.5 and 10.4 (through game on 1/17). Younger sister Stephanie is a freshman for the Terps, as well, averaging 4.5 points per game.

Defensive Improvements
  • An offseason key for the Greyhounds was to sure up their half-court defense, and through 17 games, statistics show an improvement in that area.
  • Last year, Loyola was 261st in NCAA Division I in scoring defense (75.3 points allowed per game), and it was even worse in opponent 3-point field-goal percentage (307th, .372).
  • This year, opponents are shooting just .306 (90-of-294) from 3-point range and averaging 70.9 points per game. Those numbers rank 31st and 153rd in NCAA Division I through games of Jan. 16.

Up Next
  • Loyola remains on the road for its next game, a Saturday, Jan. 21, contest in Hamilton, New York, where Colgate will host the Greyhounds at 2 p.m.
  • The Greyhounds then return to Reitz Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 25, for a 7:30 p.m. contest against College of the Holy Cross.
