CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Loyola University Maryland's Andre Walker was named The Rock Patriot League Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Greyhounds to a pair of conference victories last week.
The junior guard finished the games averaging 22 points, seven rebounds, five assists and better than two steals as Loyola topped Lehigh University, 62-60, and the U.S. Military Academy, 78-63 to improve to 13-10 overall and 7-5 in the conference.
Monday's award is Walker's second of the season and third of his career.
Last Wednesday, Walker scored 19 points in a two-point win over the Mountain Hawks with his final basket providing the final margin. Tied at 60-60, Walker drove the right side of the lane, crossed over to his left hand and made a contested layup from inside the paint with 27.2 seconds left in regulation. He finished the game with nine rebounds, six assists and two steals to go with his point total.
Walker then posted 18 points in the first half, and a game-high 25 overall, of the Greyhounds' outing Saturday against Army West Point, helping Loyola defeat the Black Knights. He knocked down five of seven from 3-point range and also grabbed five rebounds, dished out four assists and had three steals.
He improved his season-long averages to 15.3 points, 3.8 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game with his weekly line. In Patriot League action, Walker is averaging 16.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.8 assists.
Loyola hits the road for its next two games, starting with a 7 p.m. game in Annapolis, Maryland, on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the U.S. Naval Academy.
