Spencer Repeats As Patriot League Offensive Player Of The Year

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Loyola University Maryland's sophomore attacker Pat Spencer earned Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year for the second time in as many years and was one of six Greyhounds to earn All-Patriot League honors.
Spencer is the first player in conference history to win the award in both his freshman and sophomore seasons. He leads the Patriot League in points and assists per game with averages of 5.46 and 3.54 this season. 
He is joined on the All-Patriot League First Team by senior midfielder Brian Sherlock who, with Monday's honor, is the fourth player in League history to earn First Team laurels all four years of his career (Tim Pearson, U.S. Military Academy, 1999-2002; Austin Winter, Bucknell University, 2007-2010; Peter Baum, Colgate University, 2010-2013).
Four Greyhounds were named to the All-Patriot League Second Team, as well: junior short-stick defensive midfielder Brian Begley, senior defender Jack Carrigan, senior midfielder Romar Dennis and sophomore attacker Alex McGovern.
Loyola won the Patriot League Regular-Season crown on Friday night with a 14-6 victory at Army West Point, and the Greyhounds will host the Patriot League Semifinals and Championship Game at Ridley Athletic Complex April 28 and 30. Loyola will take on the lowest remaining seed after Tuesday's quarterfinals in 4:30 p.m. semifinal on Friday. Tickets are available for purchase at LoyolaGreyhounds.com/tickets.
Through 13 games, Spencer is tops in NCAA Division I in assists and third in points per game. His 71 points are tied for fifth in Loyola single-season history, and his 46 assists are third. Spencer has recorded two or more points in all but one of his 31 career games, and in that limited sample he has posted 62 goals, 98 assists and 160 points. His career totals in assists and points and good for third and eighth, respectively, at Loyola; his 98 assists are tied for ninth in Patriot League history.
Sherlock has been a dodging and scoring threat for the Greyhounds since he came to the school in 2014. This season, he is third on the team with 20 goals and fourth with 24 points, numbers that are both tops amongst Greyhounds midfielders. In 63 career games, Sherlock, a three-year captain for Loyola,7 has accumulated 92 goals and 46 assists for 138 points, and he is the active goal scoring leader amongst NCAA Division I midfielders. His 92 career goals rank 14th in school history.
Begley has been one of the top short-stick defensive midfielders in the country this year and was the only one from his position named to an All-Patriot League team. In addition to playing excellent one-on-one defense during the year, Begley has 23 ground balls and six caused turnovers for the Greyhounds while helping to lead their transition game. Loyola has ranked in the top three nationally in clearing percentage all season, and Begley has added to the Greyhounds' offense with seven goals and an assist this season.
Carrigan has been an anchor on the Greyhounds close defense as a three-year starter. He is nearing career-highs in caused turnovers (21) and ground balls (37) this season and has been at his best late in the year combining for 12 ground balls and six caused turnovers in Loyola's last two regular-season games. During his career, Carrigan has amassed 116 ground balls and 63 caused turnovers, a total that ranks fifth in school history.
Dennis earned All-Patriot League Second Team honors for the second year in a row. In 13 games this year, he has scored 14 goals to go with seven assists for the Greyhounds. The midfielder has tallied 81 points in four years with 52 goals and 29 assists.
McGovern made an immediate impact for the Greyhounds during his first year on the Evergreen campus after transferring from the University of North Carolina. A midfielder coming into the year, he stepped into a starting role on attack for the Greyhounds and ranks second on the team in goals (21), assists (18) and points (39). He also ranks seventh in the Patriot League in points (3.0) and eighth in assists per game (1.38).
