WASHINGTON, D.C. – Loyola University Maryland sophomore Pat Spencer was named a semifinalist for the Tewaaraton Award Presented by Under Armour on Friday, an award that is presented annually to the top male and female college lacrosse player in the nation.
Earlier this week, Spencer became the first player in Patriot League history to earn the conference's Offensive Player of the Year honors in his first two seasons, capturing the award by a unanimous vote of the League's coaches.
Spencer and the Greyhounds will open play in the 2017 Patriot League Championships on Friday, April 28, when they host College of the Holy Cross at 4:30 p.m. in the first of two semifinals at Ridley Athletic Complex. Loyola earned the Patriot League Regular-Season Championship and No. 1 seed in the tournament. Tickets for the weekend are available for purchase at LoyolaGreyhounds.com/tickets.
Through 13 games, Spencer is tops in NCAA Division I in assists and third in points per game. His 71 points are tied for fifth in Loyola single-season history, and his 46 assists are third. Spencer has recorded two or more points in all but one of his 31 career games, and in that limited sample he has posted 62 goals, 98 assists and 160 points.
His career totals in assists and points and good for third and eighth, respectively, at Loyola; his 98 assists are tied for ninth in Patriot League history.
Five men's and five women's finalists will be selected from the semifinalists and announced on Thursday, May 11. Those 10 individuals will be invited to the 17th-annual Tewaaraton Award Ceremony on Thursday, June 1 in Washington, D.C.
