Spencer Named Inside Lacrosse First-Team All-American

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland's Pat Spencer was named a first-team All-American by Inside Lacrosse Magazine Sunday night, the publication announced when the teams were revealed on ESPNU.
Spencer was one of four Greyhounds who earned All-America recognition as midfielder Brian Sherlock, defender Jack Carrigan and goalkeeper Jacob Stover earned honorable mention. The three teams were compiled by more than 30 members of the lacrosse media who vote in the weekly Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. It is the first-ever postseason All-America team compiled by the magazine.
Last month, Spencer became the first player in Patriot League history to earn Offensive Player of the Year in his first two seasons, and Sherlock joined only three other conference players to be a four-me All-Patriot League First Team honoree.
All four Loyola players honored by Inside Lacrosse were named to the Patriot League Championships All-Tournament Team after the Greyhounds earned their third League title in four years. Stover was tabbed the Championships Most Valuable Player.
Spencer finished his sophomore season with 28 goals and a school- and Patriot League-record 55 assists. His 83 points are tied for fourth-most in Loyola's single-season history. One of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award as the nation's top player, he led the Patriot League in both assists (3.44) and points (5.19) per game, totals that were first and third, respectively, in NCAA Division I entering the NCAA Championships.
In a March game against College of the Holy Cross, Spencer dished out nine assists, setting a Patriot League single-game record while also matching the Loyola game record set in 1981 by Gary Hanley. In just 34 career games, Spencer has recorded 172 total points to rank eighth in Loyola's career history. He is one of just three Greyhounds players to have 100 or more assists in a career, and his 107 rank third at the school.
Carrigan, a senior defender, played some of his top lacrosse late in the season while earning All-Patriot League Second Team honors. He had two or more caused turnovers in seven of the Greyhounds' final eight games and five times had three or more. Carrigan finished the year with 51 ground balls and 29 caused turnovers, career-highs in both categories. A two-time team captain, he averaged 4.57 groundballs per game in Loyola's last seven contests. Carrigan wrapped up his career with 130 ground balls and 71 caused turnovers; his caused turnover total ranks fifth in school history.
Sherlock was the Greyhounds' first three-time team captain at the Division I level who also was a four-time All-Patriot League First Team honoree, the first midfielder to earn such laurels in conference history. He ended his senior season tied for second on the team with 24 goals to go with six assists for 30 points. Sherlock concluded his four years at Loyola with 96 goals, 48 assists and 144 points; his goal total ranks 11th in school history, while his points are tied for 14th. At the end of the regular-season, he was named the Patriot League Men's Lacrosse Scholar-Athlete of the Year as the top student-athlete in the sport.
Stover posted solid numbers in goal for the Greyhounds, playing to a 7.74 goals-against average and a .547 saves percentage, numbers thank ranked first and second, respectively, in the Patriot League. He saw nearly 800 minutes between the pipes as a sophomore and entered the NCAA Championships ranked fifth in goals-against average and 10th in saves percentage. His numbers were outstanding in the Greyhounds' last 10 games of the season. After five contests to open the year, he had a 10.41 goals-against average while saving 50 percent of shots on goal. Those numbers have moved to 6.04 and 59.4 over the last 10.
