Greyhounds Never Trail In Volleyball’s Sweep Of Lafayette

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland scored the match's first six points on Friday night, and the Greyhounds never trailed as they knocked off visiting Lafayette College, 25-14, 25-13, 25-17 in Patriot League volleyball action.

Loyola's victory was its fifth in a row, marking the first time since October 2010 that the Greyhounds have posted that long of a winning streak. It also was the team's sixth Patriot League win of the year, the most Loyola has won since joining the conference in 2013.

As a team, the Greyhounds (11-11 overall, 6-3 Patriot League) hit .323, despite swinging at just a .098 clip in the final set.

Cat Vaccaro and Haley Puddy each had eight kills from the right side, while Ann Ernst and Molly Jarvis both posted seven kills. Mackenzie Fedota and Abby Hamilton added six each.

Loyola jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the serving of Molly Werts while Vaccaro had two kills in the stretch. The Greyhounds extended their lead to eight, 12-4, and later pushed ahead for 25-14 win in the set.

The Greyhounds put away 15 kills without an error on only 22 swings in the second set, hitting .682 while siding out on 13 of 14 opportunities to go up 2-0 in the match.

In the third, Loyola scored five-straight points to lead 12-6 on a Puddy kill, and an Ernst swing gave the Greyhounds a 13-6 advantage. Lafayette (5-16, 0-9), however, came back to tally 10 of the next 13 points, knotting the score at 16-16 on a Kelly Austin ace.

Loyola, however, ran off seven in a row, in part due to four-straight Leopards attack errors.

The Greyhounds had 42 total kills in the match to go with 44 digs, 16 from Katie Forsythe. Jarvis led all players with four blocks.

Loyola is back in action on Saturday afternoon with a 2 o'clock match in Reitz Arena against Lehigh University.
