Second-Half Shooting Keys Detroit Mercy Win Over Men’s Basketball

DETROIT – James Fives hit a three from the corner to put Loyola University Maryland up one at halftime, but the University of Detroit Mercy made nine of their first 10 3-point attempts after the break to pull away for a 91-63 victory Monday night in the GotPrint.com Legends Classic presented by Old Trapper.

Fives' three with less than five seconds to go in the opening half gave Loyola a 38-37 lead, btu Detroit Mercy's Antoine Davis scored 17 points and had an assist in the first four minutes of the second half to held the Titans take a 56-46 lead on one of his five threes during that stretch.

Andrew Kostecka, who scored a career-high 23 points for Loyola (1-4) scored in the paint off a Fives assist at 16:23, making it a seven-point game, but Davis answered with another three, and Derrien King hit one at 15:13 to extend the lead to 59-46.
Chuck Champion hit a three, and after a Detroit Mercy free throw, Brent Holcombe scored two of his 12 points to make it a nine-point game with 12:22 on the clock.

The Titans, however, scored the next 10 points, and their lead was at least 14 from that point until the final buzzer.

Holcombe logged his second-straight double-double, and third of his career, with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Champion added 10, and Kostecka's 23 came on a career-high 10 field goals made.

Davis, who entered the game ranked third in NCAA Division I in scoring, finished with 42 points on 10 of 14 from 3-point range. King added 17, while Josh McFolley and Tra'Quan Knight had 10 for the Titans.
