WORCESTER, Mass. – Loyola University Maryland freshman libero
Katie Forsythe set the Patriot League single-season record for digs on Friday night as the Greyhounds swept host College of the Holy Cross, 30-28, 25-21, 25-20.
Forsythe's 14
th and final dig of the match gave her 613 for the season, one more than Bucknell University's Kristen Sydlowski had during the 2006 season. She is now 14 digs shy of setting the Loyola single-season record and passing the mark of 626 set in 2007 by Brittany Born.
Ann Ernst (13) and
Abby Hamilton (11) combined for 24 kills, and
Haley Puddy tallied seven while hitting .778 to lead the Greyhounds' offense.
Holy Cross (6-20 overall, 5-8 Patriot League) nearly took a 1-0 lead in the match after having four set-point opportunities in the first. The Greyhounds (12-14, 7-6), however, held off each one and had their first set-point chance at 28-27 after a Crusaders attack error.
Loyola had a hitting miscue, tying the game at 28-28, but Puddy put away a kill to give the Greyhounds a one-point advantage. Hamilton then hit off the Holy Cross block to record the Greyhounds' 30
th point of the set, sending them to an early lead in the match.
The Crusaders jumped out to a four-point lead, 6-2, in the opening points of the second set, but Loyola scored seven of the next nine points to jump in front on a Hamilton kill. The Greyhounds later led by seven, 20-13, but Holy Cross rattled off five of six to close to within three, 21-18.
Loyola sided out on a Hamilton swing, and a Crusaders attack error pushed the Greyhounds' lead back to five, and they would close out the second set, 25-21.
A Johnna Shamley kill in the third set put Holy Cross up three, 12-9, but
Alisah Cash had a Loyola kill for sideout, jumpstarting a 6-0 Loyola run that put it ahead 15-12 on a Forsythe service ace.
Holy Cross tied the score at 17-17 on a Rachel Harding kill, but an Ernst kill and a block by Cash and Vaccaro, followed by a Cash-Ernst stuff gave the Greyhounds the lead for good.
Loyola continues its Patriot League road-swing on Saturday night when it takes on the U.S. Military Academy in a 7 o'clock contest.
