BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland's
Matt Fitzmaurice and
Skyler Gates teamed to take second place in the 2018 Loyola Men's Tennis Invitational this weekend.
The event, which was initially scheduled to run through Sunday, was completed in two days due to the forecasted rain tomorrow.
After Fitzmaurice and Gates posted a 7-5 doubles win over Mount St. Mary's Alonso Garcia and Jean Armstrong, Fitzmaurice delivered the winning point with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Armstrong in singles. Garcia got past Gates, 6-2, 6-2.
The Greyhounds' duo then fell, 3-0, to the Mountaineers' Jackson Wood and Parth Sharma in the championship match. The Mount pair won, 6-3, in doubles. Wood was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Gates, and Sharma outlasted Fitzmaurice, 7-6, 3-6, (10-6) in singles.
Loyola's
Kyle Gower and
Benny Glezer advanced to the fifth-place match at the tournament, dispatching Johns Hopkins University's Jack Hogan and Aaron Wang, 2-1, in their first match Saturday. Gower and Glezer teamed for a 6-0 sweep in doubles, and Glezer defeated Wang, 6-3, 6-0, in singles to secure the win.
They then faced the mixed team of Johns Hopkins' Bryan Wang and Loyola's
Nate Ferro in the fifth-place match. Gower and Glezer beat Bryan Wang and Ferro, 6-3, in doubles, but Want came back for a 6-3, 7-5 win over Gower in singles. Glezer and Ferro did not play their singles match, and the circuit ended in a tie.
Several other pairs saw scattered action on Saturday in the consolation draw.
Peter Kelley and
Cooper Tomchik took on Chris Lindsey and Evan Hine of Mount St. Mary's in the consolation semifinals, falling 6-3 in doubles. Kelley then rallied to knock off Lindsey, 4-6, 6-4, (10-7) in singles, before Hine beat Tomchik, 6-1, 7-5.
In the other consolation semifinal, Johns Hopkins' Eric Yoo and Eric Burrer beat a mixed threesome from Loyola. The Blue Jays duo topped
Edik Pribitkin and
Charlie Shanker, 6-3, in doubles, but Pribitkin took down Yoo, 6-1, 7-6 (4) in singles. Burrer beat Loyola's
Colin Corsini, 6-3, 6-2.
Grant Williford and
Colin Kanuch won their first match of the day, topping a Lafayette pair, starting with a 7-5 win in doubles. Williford beat Paul Caruso, 7-5, 6-2, in singles, and Kanuch was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Jamie Hill.
That Loyola pair then took on John Yurconic and Daniel Kramer in the 13
th-place match, a contest that resulted in a 1-1 draw. Williford and Kanuch edged the Leopards, 7-6 (5), in doubles, but Kanuch fell 4-6, 6-1, (10-1) to Kramer in singles. Yurconic and Williford did not play their singles match.
Five Loyola players took part in another bracket to close the day. Kelley and Tomchik beat Shanker and
Kian Ziari, 6-1, in doubles, and Ziari then slipped past Shanker, 8-7, in singles. Corsini was a 2-6, 6-2, (12-10) winner over Kelley in singles.
