Two Lacrosse Alums Named To USLacrosse Chesapeake Chapter HOF

ANNAPOLIS – A pair of former Loyola University Maryland lacrosse players – Andi (Holthaus) Whiteford '87 and Charley Toomey '90 – were named to the USLacrosse Chesapeake Chapter Hall of Fame and will be honored later this month at a formal induction ceremony.

Toomey and Whiteford will be joined by four others – Megan Riely Clark, Kate Graw Lamond, Jack Schofield and Josh Sims – for the chapter's Class of 2019 at an enshrinement dinner on Thursday, January 24, at the Annapolis Elks Lodge #662.

Both players were All-Americans for their respective programs and are still among the career leaders in statistical categories for their sports.

Whiteford starred at Archbishop Spalding in the early 1980s prior to joining the Loyola women's lacrosse program that was establishing itself as one of the top teams in the nation under Head Coach Anne McCloskey. She was named to the Loyola Athletics Hall of Fame in 1994.

As a freshman in 1984, she helped the Greyhounds reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time, and she was a major key in 43 wins over her four seasons on the Evergreen campus.

She was one of the first three players in school history to earn Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-America honors after the body began awarding the recognition in 1984. She was tabbed honorable mention in 1985, second team in 1986 and first team in 1987.

Whiteford, whose daughter, Cami, who was a women's lacrosse player for the Greyhounds and graduated in 2017 after scoring 54 goals to go with 13 assists as a senior, still ranks in the top-10 in two career scoring categories at Loyola. She is fourth with 184 goals and sixth with 246 points.

Toomey, who earlier this week was named to the U.S. Men's National Team coaching staff as an assistant, had a decorated career as a goalkeeper for the Greyhounds and has been a part of the men's lacrosse program for 27 years.

The Greyhounds' current head coach, who is entering his 14th season with a 134-64 career record, graduated from Loyola in 1990 with a 25-5 career record as a starting goalkeeper. He led the Greyhounds to the 1990 NCAA Championship Game, the program's first-ever appearance in the national semifinals or title contest.

He joined Dave Cottle's coaching staff immediately after graduation and was an assistant coach at Loyola for nine seasons – bookending stops as an assistant at the U.S. Naval Academy and head coach at both the U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School and the Severn School – before taking over as head coach in 2006.

As the Greyhounds' head coach, he has mentored 38 United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-Americans, 71 all-conference selections, 18 conference positional players or rookies of the year, 13 USILA Scholar All-Americans and four Tewaaraton Award finalists.

Toomey's 2012 squad went 18-1, a school-record for victories, and won Loyola's first NCAA Division I Championship in any sport. He was named the USILA Coach of the Year that season.
