Nick Mejia all birdied the par-5 18
th hole Tuesday at Four Streams Golf Club, helping Loyola University Maryland golf finish the three-round Georgetown Intercollegiate at 10-over par in second place.
The Greyhounds matched the 54-hole score of Butler University, but Loyola won second-place in a tiebreaker based on the teams' No. 5 player's third-round score. The Greyhounds and Bulldogs both finished at 10-over in the three-round tournament.
Washington, which entered the week ranked No. 28 in Golfweek's national ratings, won the event with a score of 17-under par.
Loyola and Butler were 11 shots better than fourth-place Florida Atlantic, and the Owls were followed by Princeton, St. Joseph's, William & Mary, Rhode Island, Georgetown, Seton Hall, Creighton and DePaul.
Preston Ball carded a pair of even-par 71s on Monday and a 2-over 73 to lead the Greyhounds individually at the tournament, coming in tied for ninth.
Ball started his final round with an eagle on the 536-yard par-5 first hole, and he moved to 3-under for the day with a birdie on the par-5 fourth hole. He dropped his score to 4-under through seven when he birdied the par-3 seventh, but a bogey on the ninth moved him back to 3-under at the turn.
He again went to 4-under for his third round with a birdie on the 11
th, but a double bogey on the next hole followed by four bogeys on the next five holes moved him to 2-over for the afternoon.
Berry had Tuesday's best round for Loyola, playing the front nine at 1-under with three birdies and two bogeys, all on the first five holes. He then had consecutive bogies on the 12
th and 13
th holes, but his final-hole birdie finished his day at even-par 71, and he tied for 20
th overall at 6-over.
Brown used a birdie on the 18
th to get to 2-over for the day, finishing his tournament in 14
th place at 3-over par.
Carlo Pizzano played Tuesday's back-nine at 1-under with birdies at 10 and 14, combined with a bogey on the 18
th, to finish the day at 2-over 73. Overall, he shot 4-over through the three rounds and tied for 15
th.
Nick Mejia's birdie on the 18
th hole gave him a third-round score of 5-over 76, good enough to edge Butler's Michael Cascino who shot 6-over 77 to break the second-place tie in the Greyhounds' favor. Mejia tied for 43
rd at the tournament with a three-round 13-over.
Matt Malits led two Loyola individuals at the event as he shot 6-over on Tuesday to card a three-round 9-over to tie for 27
th.
Turner Foster tied for 37
th at 11-over after shooting 4-over Tuesday.
Loyola wraps up its fall schedule in two weeks when it heads to the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Championship at the Montclair Golf Club in West Orange, New Jersey, October 27-28.
