BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's basketball looks to snap a four-game losing streak with a 7 p.m. Friday night matchup at Mount St. Mary's. The Greyhounds will be playing away from Reitz Arena for a seventh time out of eight games to begin the season.


Last Time Out

  • Sr. G Stephanie Karcz set a new Loyola program record for steals with the sixth of her seven thefts during a 66-51 defeat to Wright State on Day 2 of a holiday tournament at Florida Atlantic last Saturday.
  • Karcz, who also contributed five points and 12 rebounds, has 349 steals through her first 97 collegiate appearances, including 38 in seven games this season.
  • Fr. F Emily McAteer set season-highs with 14 points (5-9 FG) and three steals in 20 minutes off the bench, while Fr. G Ava Therien added 10 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the defeat.
  • Wright State, which won 27 games and finished as Horizon League champions last season, held Loyola to a 30.6 FG% (19-62) and a 15.0 3FG% (3-20).

Series History

  • Mount St. Mary's leads 25-15 in a series which dates back to 1974.
  • The Greyhounds, though, have won eight of the 12 meetings since Joe Logan took over as head coach in 2005.
  • The Mountaineers have topped Loyola in each of the last two seasons, including a 77-67 triumph at Reitz Arena last December.
  • The Greyhounds' last victory was a 58-53 decision at Reitz on Dec. 3, 2016. Their last win in Emmittsburg was a 65-63 victory on Dec. 5, 2015.

Scouting Mount St. Mary's

  • The Mountaineers (3-3) have won three of their last four contests since starting the season with defeats at Kentucky and Indiana.
  • This will be their first game since a 75-58 road victory at Radford on Nov. 26. Six different players scored in double figures, led by 14 points from Aryna Taylor off the bench. Leading scorer (11.3 ppg) Kendall Bresee added 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
  • Mount St. Mary's leads the Northeast Conference in 3's per game (8.2) this season, and ranks second in scoring margin (+3.2), scoring defense (62.3 ppg) and steals per game (11.2).
  • The Mount, which went 15-16 (8-10 NEC) last season, was projected to finish third out of 11 schools in this year's Northeast Conference preseason poll.

Milestone-Filled Tournament for Karcz

  • Prior to setting Loyola's new steals record, Stephanie Karcz became the 22nd player in program history to score 1,000 points the previous afternoon against Florida Atlantic. She totaled 20 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and six steals in a 72-61 defeat to the Owls.
  • Karcz is up to 1,006 career points, six back of Camille Joyner (1991-95) in 21st all-time.
  • The last of Karcz's three assists on Saturday was the 313th of her collegiate career, moving her past Shannon Cohen (1997-01) for eighth place all-time at Loyola.
  • Karcz also ranks No. 5 all-time with 872 career rebounds, as she looks to become the fourth Loyola player in team history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She is 28 boards away from surpassing Mary Anne Kirsch (1995-99) for fourth place. 
  • Karcz is currently second nationally in steals per game (5.4). With her 349 steals, she has an opportunity to become the 28th player in Division I history to reach 400 for her collegiate career.

Freshmen Contributions

  • Freshmen Emily McAteer and Ava Therien each reached double figures for a second time this season during Loyola's defeat to Wright State last Saturday.
  • McAteer, who totaled 14 points over the weekend, surpassed her previous season best of 11 points which was established during a 75-46 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 13.
  • Therien scored 10+ points for a second time in the past three games, as she netted a season-high 12 points (6-8 FG) at St. Francis Brooklyn on Nov. 24. Her seven rebounds and five assists on Saturday were both season-bests.
  • Therien is shooting 55.9% (19-34) from the field in her first seven appearances.
Edwards, Connolly Both Threats from Long Distance
  • So. G Laryn Edwards and Jr. F Delaney Connolly are both shooting over 35 percent from 3-point range early on this season.
  • Edwards has hit 8 of 21 attempts from beyond the arc (38.1%), including a 4 for 5 effort at FDU on Nov. 13.
  • Connolly leads the team with 13 made 3's, and she is 13 for 36 (36.1%) overall from long distance. Connolly ranks fourth among Patriot League shooters in 3's per game (1.9).

  • Sr. G Stephanie Karcz has received seven Patriot League postseason awards in her first three collegiate seasons. The 2017-18 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, she is a three-time All-Defensive Team selection, a two-time All-Patriot League performer (first team in 2017-18), and she was also an All-Rookie Team honoree as a freshman.
  • Karcz has ranked fourth in DI in steals per game in each of the last two seasons (4.24 spg in 2018-19). 
  • Karcz set a new single-game team and Patriot League record with 22 rebounds in last year's playoff game against Navy. She also holds Loyola's single-season rebounding record, grabbing 317 boards as a sophomore in 2017-18.
  • Karcz has 313 career assists (8th all-time at Loyola), 22 career double-doubles, two triple doubles and 11 games with 20+ points.
