BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's tennis used an advantage in doubles play and picked up singles wins from
Kateri Martin and
Sandra Aguirre on Wednesday to defeating visiting Morgan State University, 4-3, but the Bears' men's team topped the Greyhounds, 7-0.
Lin Robertson and
Alexandria Agee took the No. 2 doubles match, 6-3, over Averiana Mitchell and Jourdan Wallace, and
Abby Decker and Aguirre won the No. 3 match by default to score the crucial early point.
Martin then rallied for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Peggy Rooke at No. 1 singles, and Aguirre was a 6-2, 5-2 winner over Dana Santiano, who defaulted with an injury at No. 5 singles. Agee posted a win by default at No. 6.
Rooke and Asmara Rose edged Martin and
Abigail Thornton, 6-4, at No. 1 doubles. Rose was then a come-from-behind winner, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5), over Thornton at No. 2 singles, and Mitchell used a third set to beat Decker, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. Wallace was a three-set winner over Robertson, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 4.
On the men's side,
Skyler Gates and
Matt Fitzmaurice were 6-0 winners at No. 1 doubles for the Greyhounds over Sebastian Lopez and Shrey Gupta, but it was the only match the Greyhounds claimed.
Arjun Ravakrishnan and Sergei Kharchev topped
Benny Glezer and
C.J. Cash, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles, and Oguzhan Ceylan and Nihit Rawal were 6-2 winners against
Brian Hoffarth and
Kyle Gower at No. 3.
Kharchev defeated Hoffarth, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, and Ravakrishnan beat Gates, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 2. Rawal got past Glezer, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3, and Ceylan beat Gower, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4. Lopez topped Fitzmaurice, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 5, and Gupta was a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Cash at No. 6.
