BALTIMORE – Hofstra University women's tennis came back after losing the doubles point to win four of six singles matches, handing host Loyola University Maryland its first dual-match loss of the season, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at the McClure Tennis Center. The Pride men shutout the Greyhounds, 7-0.
Loyola won at No. 1 and 3 doubles, taking an early 1-0 lead in the match.
Kateri Martin paired with
Abigail Thornton for a 6-2 win in the top slot over Jasmine King and Sarah Catherine Herndon, while
Abby Decker and
Sandra Aguirre were 6-3 winners against Odessa Stork and Ronia Dolabany at No. 3.
Hofstra did pick up a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles as Alejandra Ruffin and Katherine Kachkarov beat
Lin Robertson and
Alexandria Agee.
Agee took a 6-1, 6-2 win over Mundisa Wallè at No. 6 singles, and Aguirre was a 6-2, 6-7 (5), (10-7) victor against Stork at No. 5, but the Pride won the one through four singles matches.
Ruffini edged Martin, 7-5, 7-6 (5) at No. 1, and King came back to knock off Thornton, 2-6, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2. Kachkarov then beat Decker, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 3 singles, and Herndon was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Robertson.
In the men's match, Hofstra swept the Greyhounds in all nine matches. Shaun Jackson and Coco Haener beat
Skyler Gates and Matthew Fitzmaurice, 6-2, at No.1 doubles, and Marcus Smitha nd Jan Leithner were 6-2 winners against
Benny Glezer and
C.J. Cash at No. 2. Ryan Hardin and Giacomo Pezzoli teamed for a 6-2 triumph against
Brian Hoffarth and
Kyle Gower at No. 3.
In singles play,
Edik Pribitkin was the lone Loyola player to win a set, but Pezzoli came back from the opening frame setback to win, 3-6, 6-3, (10-4), at No. 5. Smith was a 6-4, 2-1 (default, injury) winner against Gates, and Jackson used scores of 6-0, 6-2 to beat Glezer at No. 2.
Haener topped Fitzmaurice, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 3, and Leithner was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at No. 4 against Cash. Julien Wolfe beat
Charlie Shanker, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
The Loyola men continue home action Wednesday when it hosts the University of Delaware at 3 p.m., and both Greyhounds teams are in action with a flurry of Patriot League matches at the U.S. Military Academy this weekend.
