BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland celebrated head men's and women's tennis coach
Rick McClure's 40
th year at the school on Sunday with a ceremony honoring his tenure between two Patriot League matches.
Well over 100 former players, friends and family turned out at the tennis center named for the longtime coach to celebrate his impact on the lives on those he has coached at Loyola since 1979.
In the morning match, Boston University got past the Loyola women, 7-0, and later in the day Bucknell University topped the Greyhounds men, 6-1.
Bucknell's men took two of the three doubles matches to earn the early point.
Benny Glezer and
C.J. Cash scored a 6-4 win for the Greyhounds at No. 2 over Andrei Vitiuc and Alex Pedrazzini, but the Bison took the No. 1 and 3 matches. Marwan Abaza and Max McDonald teamed for a 6-3 victory over
Skyler Gates and
Matt Fitzmaurice at No.1, while Ethan Jacobs and Cooper Bradshaw were 6-3 winners against
Brian Hoffarth and
Kyle Gower at No. 3.
In singles play, Gower had the Greyhounds lone victory; he beat Vitiuc, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4.
Jacobs downed Hoffarth, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1, and McDonald beat Gates at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4. Abaza was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 3 against Glezer, and Ryan Jurist topped Fitzmaurice, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5. In the No. 6 match, Bradshaw defeated Cash, 6-2, 6-2.
On the women's side, the Terriers yielded just four points in doubles play. Remi Ramos and Lily Burchell recorded a 6-1 win over
Kateri Martin and Abby Thornton at No. 1, and Emily Kim paired with Shelly Yaloz to post a 6-2 victory over
Lin Robertson and
Alexandria Agee at No. 2. In the third flight. Sabrina Faybyshev and Sophia Kryloff were 6-1 winners against
Abby Decker and
Sandra Aguirre.
Yalez won a spirited No. 1 singles match, escaping Martin 6-3, 7-5, while Ramos defeated Thornton, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2. Burchell was a 6-0, 6-3 winner against Decker at No. 3, while Kim beat Robertson, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4. In the fifth flight, Katya Martens got past Aguirre, 6-4, 6-0, and Faybyshev topped Agee, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
