Spencer Named USILA Player of the Year; Five Earn All-America Honors

Pat Spencer, Chase Scanlan, Ryan McNulty, Kevin Lindley and Jacob Stover were named USILA All-Americans.
BALTIMORE – Pat Spencer became the first Loyola University Maryland player to be named the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Outstanding Player of the Year on Thursday as he was one of five Greyhounds to earn All-America honors.

Spencer was given the Lt. Raymond J. Enners Most Outstanding Player of the Year from the USILA and was one of two First Team All-Americans for the Greyhounds. He is also the Greyhounds' and the Patriot League's first four-time All-American in program history.

Thursday marked the first time Loyola has had two players earn All-America First Team recognition two years in a row as Jacob Stover earned the honor following his standout senior campaign in goal for the Greyhounds.

Spencer and Stover were joined on the All-America teams by Chase Scanlan, who was named to the second team, along with Kevin Lindley and Ryan McNulty who earned honorable mention. It is the first time the Greyhounds have had five All-American since the 2014 season, and it marks the eight-straight season they have had two or more.

Loyola's players earned the honor all while playing the fourth-toughest schedule in NCAA Division I this season and finishing with a 12-5 record and a trip to the NCAA Quarterfinal.

Spencer wrapped up his career as the all-time leader in assists in NCAA Division I history (231) and second in career points (380); he set Patriot League and school records in career points and assists and finished second at Loyola in goals (149), a total that is fourth in the conference. Spencer is also one of five finalists for the Tewaaraton Award for the third year in a row.

This year, he became the first player in Patriot League history to earn Offensive Player of the Year and All-Patriot League First Team recognition all four seasons in the sport. He shattered his own school and conference records for points (114) and assists (65), becoming the first player in school history to score 100 or more points in a single campaign one year after notching the first 90-plus point season at Loyola.

Spencer also set a career-best with 49 goals scored, a total that is sixth in school single-season history. He did his scoring damage almost equally against conference and non-conference opponents. In nine non-conference games – against NCAA Tournament teams Virginia, Johns Hopkins, Towson, Duke, Georgetown, Army West Point (in the Patriot League Semifinal), Syracuse and Penn State, as well as versus Rutgers – he posted 26 goals and 29 goals for 55 points.

Stover completed one of the finest seasons in Loyola history for the goalkeeper and caps his career with a First Team All-America nod. He leads all NCAA Division I goalkeepers in total saves (250) and is the only Division I player this season to post 10 or more saves in every game; he not only accomplished that, but he had 11 or more in all 17 outings, including nine with 15 or more.

The two-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year and four-time member of the Patriot League All-Tournament Team is second in the country in save percentage (.583) against the fourth-toughest schedule in the country, while nation's leader in the statistical category played against the No. 41 schedule.

Stover's 250 saves this season rank second in Loyola single-season history behind Steve McCloskey's 288 in 1981; the 250 saves are third-most in Patriot League season history and the most since 1999. He wrapped up his Loyola career with 645 saves, second behind McCloskey at Loyola and third in the Patriot League. He had a 8.86 career goals-against average in a school-record 3427 minutes played, 17th-most in NCAA Division I history.

Scanlan had perhaps the most-prolific goal scoring season by a freshman midfielder in NCAA Division I history. Although not completely conclusive, research has not found a midfielder who scored more than Scanlan's 43 goals in his first year of school. Scanlan's total leads all midfielders this season, regardless of class, and is a school and Patriot League record for a midfielder, topping the 41 by Jay Drapeau who was a second-teamer last year.

The Patriot League Rookie of the Year and All-Patriot League First Team honoree is tied for 26th nationally in goals scored this year and his 58 points stacked up third on the team in his freshman campaign. Scanlan posted 13 multi-goal games with eight hat tricks mixed in.

Lindley streaked past Loyola's all-time goal-scoring record in the final game of the regular season, finishing the year with 60 in 17 games to beat the total of 54 set in 19 games in 2012 by Eric Lusby. Lindley's total ranked third in NCAA Division I this season and tops in the Patriot League.

An All-Patriot League First Team honoree, Lindley had 10 hat tricks as a sophomore and 13 outings with two or more goals. His 60 goals rank third in Patriot League history, and his 64 points are tied for 13th in Loyola history. In 34 career games, Lindley has scored 97 goals and is on pace to become the fastest player to 100 goals in school history.

McNulty also became a first-time All-American on Thursday after winding down his second full-season on the field (a junior academically, he is a redshirt sophomore athletically after playing in only two games during 2017 before a season-ending injury). He was seven long-stick midfielders to be honored nationwide after leading Loyola with 25 caused turnovers while picking up 65 ground balls.

He was key to the Loyola transition game, scoring twice and assisting on two other goals this year, as well. McNulty's 25 caused turnovers rank 10th in school since-season history and fifth by a long-stick midfielder.
