WASHINGTON, D.C. – Loyola University Maryland senior
Pat Spencer was named one of five Tewaaraton Award finalists on Thursday night, joining a prestigious list of players who have been three-time finalists for the honor of college lacrosse's best player.
Spencer, who was also a finalist as a sophomore and junior, joins Duke University's Matt Danowski (2005, 2007-08), Johns Hopkins University's Kyle Harrison (2003-05), Syracuse University's Mike Powell (2002-04), Yale University's Ben Reeves (2016-18) and University at Albany's Lyle Thompson (2013-15) as a three-time finalist.
He will be joined in Washington, D.C., at the Tewaaraton Award ceremony by four other 2019 finalists: Penn State University's Grant Ament, the University of Maryland's Jared Bernhardt, Yale University's T.D. Ierlan and Princeton University's Michael Sowers.
The winner of the 2019 award will be announced on Thursday, May 30, at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.
Spencer's finalist nod is the fifth for a Loyola player in the 19-year history of the Tewaaraton Award. Mike Sawyer was named to the group in 2012, and he was followed by Joe Fletcher in 2014 and Spencer.
Last week, Spencer was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year for the fourth time in as many years, completing a feat that no other conference player has done. He also has earned All-Patriot League honors four times, is a Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipient, and thus far has earned USILA All-America recognition all three seasons.
In addition to holding Loyola and Patriot League records in assists and points, Spencer currently ranks third in NCAA career points (360) and assists (220). With six more assists, he will set the NCAA Division I all-time record, and he is 41 points shy of moving into first all-time in points. This season, Spencer has scored 40 goals to go with 54 assists for 94 points, tying his school record for points in a season.
Spencer and the Greyhounds will open NCAA Championships play as the No. 8 seed on Saturday, May 11, when they host Syracuse University in a 12 noon game at Ridley Athletic Complex. Tickets are available at
