Quick Hits About The 'Hounds

  • Loyola University Maryland, which has won back-to-back Patriot League regular season titles and enters the fall receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Division I national poll, begins its 2019 campaign with road contests at NC State and Appalachian State this weekend.
  • Eight of Loyola's 10 All-Patriot League performers from 2018 return, including three first team honorees in Sr. F Brian Saramago, Sr. M Barry Sharifi and Jr. GK Chase Vosvick.
  • Saramago and Sharifi were each named to the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List after earning third team All-America status last fall. Saramago is the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Sharifi was chosen as the conference's Preseason Midfielder of the Year.

Series History

  • Friday will be the third all-time meeting between Loyola and NC State. The Wolfpack won each of the previous matchups, which took place in 1980 and 1983, by 2-1 finals. 
  • Loyola is facing an ACC opponent for the first time since Sept. 4, 2017 vs. Pittsburgh. Loyola's last win over an ACC foe was a 2-1 victory at Pittsburgh on Sept. 20, 2016.
  • Sunday will be the first meeting between Loyola and Appalachian State.

About the Wolfpack and Mountaineers

  • NC State was the first team out of the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll, with the Wolfpack receiving 55 points in the initial rankings. NC State has reached two-straight Division I tournaments, falling in the second round to eventual national champions Maryland last fall and losing in the first round to Old Dominion in 2017.
  • Jr. M David Loera was named to the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List after achieving first team All-ACC status a year ago.
  • Appalachian State went 8-6-3 last season, posting its first winning record since 2012. The Mountaineers were picked to finish fifth out of six teams in the 2019 Sun Belt preseason poll.
  • Jr. D Zeiko Harris was a first team All-Sun Belt selection last fall.

  • Sr. F Brian Saramago is one of 12 players in Patriot League history to be named first team all-conference three times, and he has also been named All-Northeast Region in each of his three years at Loyola.
  • Saramago (26 G, 14 A) enters 2019 ranked 20th in program history in career goals, and he is 22nd all-time in career points. He totaled eight goals and eight assists last season.
  • Sr. M Barry Sharifi received his second-straight Patriot League Midfielder of the Year honor in 2018 after totaling four goals and four assists across 17 starts. He enters this season with 13 career goals, and he tied for 18th all-time at Loyola with 16 assists.
  • Saramago and Sharifi became Loyola's first All-America honorees since 2008 last fall.

  • Jr. GK Chase Vosvick has earned first team All-Northeast Region status in each of his first two collegiate seasons. He is 21-9-2 with a 0.97 goals-against average, a .757 save percentage and 14 shutouts through his first 33 appearances at Loyola.
  • Vosvick has limited opponents to one goal or fewer in 27 of his 33 collegiate starts.
  • Included among his 43 saves during the 2018 season were three penalty kick stops.

Other All-Patriot League Returners

  • Sr. F Josh Fawole (5 G, 2 A), Sr. F Nico Brown (5 G, 1 A), Sr. D Davey Mason (1 G, 1 A) and Jr. M Sam Brown (3 G, 3 A) were all second team All-Patriot League honorees in 2018, while Sr. D Jonathan Sousa landed on the third team after contributing to a backline which surrendered just 12 goals all season.
  • Fawole was named second team All-Patriot League for a second-straight season. He enters 2019 with 12 goals (including seven game-winners) and eight assists at Loyola.

Tough Road Ahead

  • Loyola will face six teams this season (NC State, Virginia Tech, James Madison, Princeton, Colgate, Wake Forest) who advanced to the NCAA College Cup in 2018, including four of their first five opponents on the year.
  • Wake Forest and James Madison each advanced to the Quarterfinals, while Virginia Tech reached the third round.
