AUSTIN, Texas – Loyola University Maryland Class of 2020 graduate
Anne Hayburn added another prestigious award to her spring collection on Friday, as she became the first Greyhound student-athlete in six years to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America status.
Hayburn (Bowie, Md./St. Mary's) was selected to the third team in the At-Large division, which includes all Division I student-athletes from the sports of beach volleyball, bowling, rowing, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis and water polo. Hayburn is one of 46 women across the country to receive All-America honors, and she is the first in the history of Loyola's swimming and diving program to be recognized.
The Academic All-America teams honor the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances both athletically and in the classroom. Thirty-three of the 46 members of the CoSIDA Academic All-America Division I Women's At-Large teams achieved at least a 3.90 GPA, with 20 student-athletes posting a 4.00 GPA during their undergraduate and/or graduate careers.
Hayburn graduated in May with a 4.0 cumulative GPA as an accounting major and information systems minor. She was
recently one of 42 winter sport student-athletes from across the three divisions to be awarded a $10,000 NCAA postgraduate scholarship, and she will continue her education at Loyola in 2020-21 working towards a master's degree in accounting.
Hayburn was a three-time individual and 11-time relay scorer at the Patriot League championships, earning a bronze medal on Loyola's 200 medley relay in 2018. She was also Vice President of the Student-Athlete Advisory committee, a student government representative for athletics, a member of the Greyhound Leadership Academy and actively involved in several community service endeavors around Baltimore.
A two-time Academic All-Patriot League selection, Hayburn served as a team captain for the swimming and diving team during her senior year. She scored on both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays at the Patriot League Championship meet back in February, and had 25 individual top-five finishes throughout the 2019-20 regular season.
Hayburn becomes Loyola's 19th CoSIDA Academic All-America selection dating back to 1979. She is the first Greyhound recognized since Joe Fletcher (men's lacrosse) in 2014, and she is the first Loyola woman to be honored nationally since Nichole Schiro (women's soccer) in 2012.
Hayburn was an active leader in the Junior H2ounds initiative, which teaches water safety skills and swimming techniques to underprivileged children in Baltimore. She was responsible for organization, scheduling and facilitation of the program and its partnership with Loyola's Center for Community Service and Justice. Hayburn was a Student Leadership Corps Mentor, a peer tutor, a Campus Ministry Lector/Eucharistic Minister and an active member of the Student-Athlete Pen Pal program and Club PALs.
Within her major, Hayburn received Loyola's Junior Accounting Achievement and Class of 2020 Business Achievement awards, and she received Business Leader awards from both T. Rowe Price and Brown Advisory.
A total of five Patriot League student-athletes were included on this year's men's and women's CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large teams. Hayburn was joined by Navy's Christian Daniel (men's lacrosse), Lehigh's Conor Gaffney (men's lacrosse), Army's Serica Hallstead (women's swimming and diving) and Navy's Micah Oh (men's swimming and diving).
