Captains Q&A - Junior Trey Higgins

Our captains' spotlight continues this morning with men's team captain Trey Higgins! A junior from Fairfax Station, Va., Higgins enters his third year with the rowing program. He was part of a novice four boat that earned bronze at the prestigious Dad Vail regatta as a freshman in 2019.

Check out the responses below to learn more about Trey and his thoughts on this year's team!

What does it mean to you to be chosen as a team captain?

Being chosen as team captain is important to me because it means my teammates trust me. They have seen the work I put in at practice and understand how much I care about our team. It is an honor to lead and encourage this group of guys to win major regattas.

What are your goals for the team this season?

My goals for the team this season are still to win medals in May, if we are presented with an opportunity. Our team has come a long way from my freshman year, and we have been getting faster every day.

What is the team doing now to stay strong and make gains?

The team is staying strong by challenging each other to continue to work out and stay in shape to have a good opportunity to succeed when we get back. We are also staying in contact with each other to allow us to remain a family.

What message do you have for this year's incoming freshman class?

For our incoming freshmen I want them to know that we are a family. If they ever need anything the entire team is ready, willing, and able to help. I also want them to know that we work hard on and off the water. In practice we are pushing each other to be the best to win medals. In the classroom we are pushing to get the best grades we can. Finally, I would say that we are going to really push that championship mentality. Having a championship mentality means that we are always putting in the work to win all the time so that when it comes time to race for gold you have the skills to do what you need to do.

What does a day in your life look like?  Or, what does a typical Monday or Tuesday look like?

My typical day starts by watching an inspirational video of my favorite sports icons before I go for a morning workout. Then I get breakfast and go to classes. After classes I make sure to start planning my homework. Normally while I do my work, I eat my lunch. Next, I work out late in the afternoon.  Finally, I eat dinner, work on my personal projects, and watch TV.

What has been your top team memory during your first few years at Loyola?

My top memory on the team was from my freshman year when my boat placed third at Dad Vails. It was such a great way to cap my first year of collegiate rowing. It was the best race I had been a part of, because it came down to the wire and my boatmates and I were able to sprint our way to a medal.
