WASHINGTON –
Delaney Connolly contributed a season-high 13 points in 23 minutes off the bench, and
Emily McAteer (11 points) reached double figures for a third time in four games, but it was not enough for Loyola University Maryland in a 67-58 setback at American on Sunday.
McAteer added two steals and a team-high six rebounds, while Connolly hit 5 of 9 shots from the field for the Greyhounds (0-4 PL, 0-2 South). Jade Edwards totaled 19 points, eight boards and five assists to help the Eagles (3-3 PL, 3-1 South) finish off a weekend sweep.
Loyola led by as many as four points in the second quarter, with a
Taleah Dixon layup completing a 9-0 run which put the visitors up 20-16 with 7:19 left in the opening half. American, though, outscored the Greyhounds in the rest of the frame by a 22-7 margin to take a 38-27 advantage into the intermission.
A Connolly 3-pointer pulled Loyola back within four points in the final minute of the third quarter, and it was ultimately a two-possession game at 50-44 heading into the fourth. The Greyhounds reduced the margin to 52-49 on a long ball by Dixon, but the Eagles responded with a 9-0 stretch to regain a double-digit lead. Loyola would not get closer than five points in the closing minutes.
Dixon,
Devyne Newman and
Isabella Therien each added nine points in the defeat, with Newman dishing out a team-high three assists and Therien adding five rebounds and a pair of steals.
Indeya Sanders (15 points, eight rebounds) and Karla Vres (12 points) joined Edwards in double figures for the home side.
Both teams committed 19 turnovers, and both shot under 25 percent from 3-point range at a combined 7 for 36 from long distance, but American managed a slim lead advantage in overall field goal percentage (44.6% vs. 40.0%) to help secure the victory.
The Greyhounds take on another South division opponent next weekend, as they host Navy at 1 p.m. on Saturday before traveling to Annapolis for a 3 p.m. tilt the following afternoon.
