Emily McAteer poured in a career-high 19 points, hitting 7 of 15 shots from the field, but hot shooting from Lafayette throughout sent the Leopards to a 66-57 victory over Loyola University Maryland on Saturday.
Sunday's meeting between the two sides, which was scheduled for 4 p.m., has been cancelled due to expected inclement weather. Loyola (0-5 PL, 0-2 South) is currently scheduled to return to action next Saturday with a 2 p.m. matchup at Bucknell.
Natalie Kucowski contributed 19 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three blocks for Lafayette (1-4 PL, 0-4 Central), which was playing in its first game since January 10 due to COVID-19 protocols. The Leopards shot 52.1 percent (25-48) from the field overall, and they hit 6 of 12 attempts from 3-point range.
McAteer's 19 points were one above her previous career-best of 18, which was established last January against Holy Cross. She added six rebounds and a career-high three assists in 30 minutes of action.
Laryn Edwards chipped in a career-high five steals for the Greyhounds, who forced 17 turnovers on the afternoon while committing only eight giveaways. Loyola's nine team steals were a new season best.
A game of runs began with Lafayette holding a 23-11 advantage in the opening minute of the second quarter. The Greyhounds responded with a 13-0 run, highlighted by two Edwards 3-pointers and a layup by
Isabella Therien which put the home side up by one. The Leopards then answered back with nine-straight points of their own, and they took a 32-26 lead into the intermission.
McAteer scored Loyola's first eight points out of the break while reducing the deficit to 37-34, but Lafayette scored 13 of the next 16 to take another double-digit advantage.
The score was 53-40 heading into the final 10 minutes. A 7-0 stretch capped by a
Taleah Dixon layup got Loyola within eight at 57-49 with 6:20 on the clock. Following a timeout, Lafayette got a 3-pointer from Nicole Johnson and held the home side to two points over the next 4:43 to seal the victory.
Dixon totaled 12 points for the Greyhounds, matching a career-high with five assists, while Therien added 10 points and five boards. With her 19 points, McAteer has now reached double figures in four of Loyola's first five games on the year.
