Day 1 Results
BALTIMORE –
Lily Mead,
Caleb Kelly and
Max Verheyen combined to post five times which lead the Patriot League this season, helping Loyola University Maryland win six events against Johns Hopkins on the first day of the swimming and diving program's annual Thomas Murphy Invitational.
Mead moved to the top of the conference leaderboard in the 100-yard backstroke and 200 individual medley. Her 100 back mark of 54.45 led off Loyola's victorious 400 medley relay squad to begin the afternoon, as Mead,
Avery Stimmel,
Izzy Barnette and
Charley Tulio completed the race in 3:48.66. The Greyhounds then posted the top three finishes in the 200 IM, with Mead (2:03.45),
Elizabeth Walsh (2:07.49) and
Laura Latham (2:08.13) beating out the rest of the field.
Kelly took first place individually in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 20.26, while Verheyen led the way in the 200 IM after touching the wall in 1:49.76. Other strong individual performances for the Loyola men included
Alex Plavoukos in the 500 free (2nd, 4:35.58) and
Jimmy Hayburn in the 50 free (3rd, 20.81).
Conor Rutigliano, Verheyen,
Sung Lee and
Henry Mueller began the meet with a runner-up performance in the 400 medley relay (3:19.45), while Kelly, Verheyen,
Harry Hearn and
Zach Reid beat out the Hopkins 'A' team in the 800 free relay with a Mangione Pool-record time of 6:40.60 to wrap up the first session of the weekend. Kelly's leadoff 200 free mark of 1:39.62 is tops among Patriot League swimmers this fall.
The Greyhounds swept the 800 free relays, as Mead,
Claire Bowser,
Gianna Moscetti and
Haley Cisewski won the women's relay in 7:36.98. Tulio added a third-place individual finish for the women in the 50 free (24.07), and Moscetti was the top Loyola finisher in the women's 500 free (4th, 5:06.33).
The Thomas Murphy Invitational resumes tomorrow morning at 10 a.m., while the third and final session is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
