BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Loyola University Maryland men's soccer took over first place in the Patriot League standings with Saturday's 1-0 overtime victory over Army West Point, and three key contributors to that result were recognized by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Jonathan Sousa, who provided the game-winning goal in the 94th minute, was honored as the Patriot League's Defensive Player of the Week, while
Chase Vosvick received his 12th career Goalkeeper of the Week award and
Jordy Luchies took home Rookie of the Week accolades. The Greyhounds (8-6-2, 6-2 PL) are two points ahead of both Holy Cross and American in the conference standings heading into Wednesday's regular season finale at Bucknell.
After beginning the year in a reserve role, Sousa (Rockville, Md./Rockville) has started each of Loyola's last four Patriot League games on the backline, with the Greyhounds winning all four contests while outscoring teams by a combined margin of 9-0. Saturday's goal was his first of the year and third in his career; all three goals have been game-winners against Patriot League opponents. A two-time All-Patriot League honoree (second team in Spring 2021, third team in 2018), Sousa earns his third career weekly award from the conference.
Vosvick (Phoenix, Md./Montverde Academy) posted his fourth-straight clean sheet during conference play, making three saves in Saturday's victory while improving to 8-5-1 overall on the year. Vosvick's top save came with just over six minutes remaining in the first half, when he stopped Army's Drew Clement in a breakaway opportunity on the left side of the box. The shutout was his seventh of the season, and he also played 109 out of 110 minutes in a scoreless draw at No. 5 West Virginia in September. Vosvick is 6-2 with a 0.53 GAA and .800 save percentage vs. Patriot League opponents, allowing just four goals in 678 minutes during conference play.
Luchies (Emmen, Netherlands/University of Groningen) played all 93 minutes at center back, helping the Greyhounds limit Army to four total shots (and just one after the intermission) over the weekend. He had the secondary assist on the game's only goal 3:03 into overtime, sending a long ball to
Matthew Lala on the left side of the box which was crossed over to Sousa for the game-winner. That was the first collegiate point for Luchies, who is the lone Loyola player to start all 16 games. He has played a team-high 1412 out of a possible 1483 minutes on the year.
The Greyhounds have now had nine players combine for 15 weekly Patriot League awards this season. Their regular season finale at Bucknell is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night.
