The Matchup

  • Loyola men's soccer will compete for its first conference title since 2009 on Saturday, as the top-seeded Greyhounds host No. 2 American in the 2021 Patriot League Championship game.
  • Loyola advanced 7-6 on penalties following a scoreless draw against No. 6 Army West Point in the semifinals, while the Eagles posted a 4-2 victory over No. 5 Navy.

Last Time Out

  • Jacob Denison converted the last of seven-straight successful penalty kicks on Tuesday, as Loyola booked its spot in the Patriot League final for the first time since joining the conference through its 7-6 shootout victory over the Black Knights.
  • Denison, Justin Ingram, Kelan Swales, Daniel Tshiani, Jordy Luchies, Matthew Lala and Kevin Medrano were all successful from the penalty spot.
  • Chase Vosvick needed to just make one save to post his fourth-straight shutout and extend his career-long scoreless streak to 383:03 minutes. Vosvick also increased his Patriot League record with a 29th career clean sheet, including nine this fall.
  • Loyola ended the contest with a 14-8 lead in shots and a 7-3 edge in corners. The Greyhounds improved to 0-4-2 in Patriot League semifinal games.

Shutout Streak Continues

  • With Tuesday's clean sheet vs. Army, Loyola has recorded four-straight shutouts for the first time since a four-game run from Oct. 7-21 in 2011. The Greyhounds' overall shutout streak of 388:35 minutes, dating back to the 85th minute of a non-conference game at Wake Forest on Oct. 19, is their longest since keeping opponents off the scoreboard for 455:40 during that 2011 stretch.
  • Loyola has posted six-straight clean sheets against Patriot League opponents, a streak which began with a 3-0 home win over American on Oct. 12.
  • The Greyhounds have held conference teams off the scoreboard for 608:30 consecutive minutes entering Saturday's final, with the last goals allowed during a 2-1 defeat to Lafayette on Oct. 9.
  • Chase Vosvick has tallied a career-high nine shutouts so far this season (tied for fifth in Division I), and he also played 109 out of 110 minutes in a scoreless draw at then-No. 5 West Virginia in September.
  • Vosvick is 9-5-2 overall on the year with a 0.83 goals-against average and .735 save percentage. Against conference opponents, he holds a microscopic 0.41 GAA with a .818 save percentage.

Quick Notes

  • The Greyhounds are 7-0-1 this season when scoring multiple goals. They are also 7-0 when leading at halftime and 6-0-1 when they outshoot opponents.
  • Justin Ingram (6 G, 9 A) and Kelan Swales (7 G, 4 A) have factored in 18 of Loyola's 25 goals on the year.
  • Daniel Tshiani (3 G, 1 A), Matthew Lala (2 G, 2 A) and Loc San (2 G, 1 A) rank third through fifth on the team in scoring.
  • Loyola posted shutouts in six of its seven Patriot League victories this season, and the Greyhounds allowed one goal or fewer in 8 of 9 conference games overall.
  • Loyola allowed just four goals in its nine regular season Patriot League games, six fewer than the next stingiest conference school (Bucknell - 10).
  • Nine Greyhounds combined for 15 PL weekly awards this season, led by Chase Vosvick (5x Goalkeeper of the Week) and Justin Ingram (3x Midfielder of the Week).
  • Twenty different Loyola players have started at least one game this season.
Series History
  • Loyola leads 28-17-6 in a series which dates back to 1949.
  • Justin Ingram (1 G, 2 A) and Daniel Tshiani (1 G, 1 A) both set season-highs with four and three points, respectively, during Loyola's 3-0 win over American on Oct. 12.
  • Kelan Swales and Ingram scored 48 seconds apart midway through the second half, breaking open what had been a one-goal game at the break.
  • Ingram set up Tshiani for the GWG following a missed PK in the 17th minute.
  • The Eagles went 2-0-1 during three meetings last spring, including a 3-2 victory in the PL semifinals, though Loyola outshot American by a 48-16 margin during the three contests.
  • The Greyhounds won all four meetings between the two teams from 2016-19.
Scouting American
  • The Eagles (9-4-4) have gone 5-0-1 since their regular season defeat to Loyola, outscoring opponents 13-6 during that stretch.
  • Sr. F David Coly and R-Sr. D Nicolas Blassou were both recognized last week as first team All-Patriot League performers. Coly leads the offense with 19 points (7 G, 5 A), nine more than No. 2 scorer Ethan Boyle (3 G, 4 A).
  • So. M Evan Schweickert (1 G, 3 A) and Fr. F Zemi Rodriguez (2 G, 2 A) were third team All-Patriot League honorees.
  • Fr. GK Dominic Dominguez (10 gp/10 gs, 7-1-0, 1.06 GAA, .773 save%) leads the Patriot League in save percentage. His only loss this season came against Loyola.
  • American won its first Patriot League title since 2004 (third overall) with a 2-1 double OT victory over Lafayette last spring. The Eagles then advanced past Jacksonville on penalties before falling 2-1 to No. 1 Clemson in the NCAA second round.

Vosvick, Ingram, Nichols Earn Major Patriot League Awards

  • Loyola accounted for half of the Patriot League's six major awards announced last week, as Chase Vosvick earned Goalkeeper of the Year accolades, Justin Ingram repeated as Midfielder of the Year and Steve Nichols was voted as Coach of the Year for a fourth time in six seasons.
  • Vosvick became the first player in conference history to receive four major awards in his storied career, and he is also now a five-time All-Patriot League performer.
  • Ingram is recognized after ranking among the conference leaders in goals (6), assists (9) and points (21). His nine assists are tied for 11th nationally, while his 21 points are second in the conference and 53rd in Division I.
  • Ingram has recorded multiple points in 8 of 17 appearances on the year.
  • Nichols is voted by his peers as the conference's Coach of the Year for a fourth time after he was previously recognized three-straight seasons from 2016-18.
  • Loyola is 37-13-6 overall against conference opponents during the past six seasons under Nichols, a 1992 Loyola graduate who rejoined the program as head coach in 2014.

Five Greyhounds Named All-Patriot League

  • Major award winners Chase Vosvick and Justin Ingram were joined by Jordy Luchies and Kelan Swales as first team All-Patriot League performers, while Jacob Denison took home third team honors for a second-straight season.
  • Loyola's four first-team selections were the most in the conference.
  • Luchies is the only player to start all 18 games this season. He has logged a team-high 1612 minutes on the backline while helping the Greyhounds record 10 shutouts for the first time since 2008.
  • Swales repeats as a first team selection after leading the Greyhounds and ranking tied for third in the conference with seven goals on the year. He is also second on the team in both assists (4) and points (18).
  • Denison also played a key role in Loyola's defensive success. He returned to the starting lineup in late September after a brief stint as a reserve, ultimately starting 13 games this fall and helping the Greyhounds post shutouts in nine of those 13 starts.

More on Vosvick

  • Chase Vosvick is a three-time United Soccer Coaches first team All-Region selection (2017-19) and a four-time Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year (2017-18, Spring 2021, 2021). He was also named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List prior to the 2021 spring season.
  • Vosvick has started 71 of Loyola's 78 games over the past four seasons, and is 41-22-7 with a 0.98 goals-against average, .726 save percentage and 29 solo shutouts in those 71 appearances.
Also Worth Noting
  • Jacob Denison, Justin Ingram and Chase Vosvick are Loyola's team captains for the 2021 fall campaign.
  • Denison recently became the program's first four-time Academic All-Patriot League Team honoree. He was joined by Vosvick and Kelan Swales on this year's 11-member team, as the Greyhounds led the conference with three selections.
  • Albert Kang holds a 4.0 cumulative GPA while majoring in business administration. Kang, Denison and Vosvick were named to the Academic All-PL Team last spring.
  • Loyola men's soccer combined for a team GPA of 3.47 during the most-recent spring semester. Twenty Greyhounds had GPA's above a 3.50, with Kang, Matthew Lala, Spencer Nattans and Vosvick all posting perfect 4.0 GPA's.
Looking Ahead
  • If the Greyhounds advance, they would earn an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament, with first round games scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 18.
