BALTIMORE –
Isabella Therien totaled a season-high 21 points, hitting four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter alone, but it was not enough for Loyola University Maryland in a 69-60 setback to Navy at Reitz Arena on Saturday.
Kolbi Green poured in 26 points, while Jennifer Coleman supplied 25 points and 15 boards for the Midshipmen (3-6 overall, 3-2 PL, 2-1 South) in their first game since Jan. 24. Navy shot 49.1 percent from the field and had a 43-28 advantage on the glass.
Therien has increased her scoring total in all five games since her season debut on Jan. 23 vs. American. She hit 8 of 15 field goal attempts and was 4 for 6 from long distance.
Laryn Edwards,
Devyne Newman and
Delaney Connolly each added eight points for the Greyhounds (0-7 PL, 0-3 South).
Loyola led 14-12 after 10 minutes, and back-to-back baskets from Connolly capped an 8-0 run to start the second quarter which put the home side ahead by double digits. The Mids responded with an 18-7 stretch to conclude the frame, with Green and Coleman combining for 15 of those points to make it a 31-30 Navy lead at halftime.
The visitors maintained their momentum in the third, shooting 8 of 11 from the floor while outscoring the Greyhounds by a 20-12 margin.
Navy led by as many as 13 points at 59-46 with 5:01 left in regulation. A 9-2 run, all through Therien 3-pointers, reduced the deficit back down to six, but Loyola could get no closer in the final minutes.
Therien totaled 20+ points for a ninth time in her collegiate career. She is now averaging a team-high 12.2 points per game on the year.
With the win, Navy snapped a four-game losing streak in the series and moved within a half-game of American for first place in the South division standings. The top two teams in the three-team division will automatically qualify for this year's modified Patriot League tournament.
The two teams meet up again tomorrow afternoon, with tip-off in Annapolis set for 3 p.m.
