The Greyhounds were up 14-12 after 10 minutes, with Therien supplying five points and seven rebounds in the opening quarter alone. American started the second on a 9-0 run, but a trio of 3-pointers by
Bri Rozzi kept Loyola within 30-26 heading into the intermission.
Loyola outscored the Eagles by a 15-10 margin in the third to take a 41-40 lead into the final 10 minutes. The Greyhounds had their final lead at 45-44 with 6:57 left, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Edwards and Karla Vres gave American an advantage it would not relinquish.
Rozzi's nine points were a new season high, while her three 3-pointers matched a career-best.
Taleah Dixon also tied a season and career-best with five assists in the defeat.
Therien's double-double was her first since she totaled 27 points and 12 boards at Colgate on Jan. 26, 2019.
