BALTIMORE –
Isaiah Hart scored a season-high 20 points, and Loyola University Maryland held visiting American University to 28.3 percent from the field as the Greyhounds scored a 60-49 Senior Night victory on Wednesday in Reitz Arena.
Â
Prior to the game, the Greyhounds honored their six seniors –
Brandon Bradsher,
Luke Johnson, Hart,
Brent Holcombe,
Ethan Norton and manager Tristan Richardson – with the players' families joining the celebration via Zoom.
Â
Loyola (4-8 overall, 1-3 Patriot League South Division) led nearly the entire game, taking a six-point lead on a
Santi Aldama basket in the paint 7:45 into the contest.
Â
The Eagles (2-5, 2-5), however, took a 27-25 lead with 25 ticks left in the first half on Ben Lubarsky's second 3-pointer of the stanza. Aldama, however, was fouled with less than three seconds to go in the half, and he made both free throws to knot the game at 27-27 going into the break.
Â
Those free throws started a 20-3 run that would span both halves and see the Greyhounds go up 45-30 with 11:38 left in regulation on two
Luke Johnson free throws. Hart scored six during the run, and Aldama had seven of his 13 points as he had his seventh double-double in nine games, adding a game-high 10 rebounds.
Â
After Johnson's free throws, American would score seven-straight points to get within 45-37 on a Jamir Harris three at 9:45, but jumpers on back-to-back possessions by Hart pushed the Loyola advantage back to double-digits for the rest of the game.
Â
American's 28.3-percent from the field was the lowest field-goal percentage by an Eagles team since they shot 23.7-percent in a November 9, 2012, game at the University of Minnesota.
Â
The Greyhounds yielded just 15 made field goals, and they forced 18 American turnovers in the game.
Â
Meanwhile, Loyola recovered from a poor-shooting first half in which it shot 29.4-percent to shoot 50-percent (13 of 26) from the floor in the second. The Greyhounds also had only nine turnovers in the game.
Â
In addition to Hart's 20 and Aldama's double-double, Johnson had eight points, and
Alonso Faure added seven off the bench.
Jaylin Andrews grabbed nine rebounds, while Johnson, Faure and
Golden Dike each had five.
Â
Aldama also blocked three shots, had two assists and two steals.
Â
Loyola continues Patriot League South Division play on Saturday, February 27, when it hosts the United States Naval Academy at 12 p.m. in Reitz Arena.
