Turnovers Plague Men’s Basketball In Saturday Loss To Navy

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland men's basketball had a season-high 24 turnovers Saturday, miscues that the U.S. Naval Academy turned into 32 points during a 73-67 Midshipmen victory at Reitz Arena.

The Greyhounds (4-9 overall, 1-4 Patriot League South) turned it over 10 times in the game's first 10-plus minutes as Navy (14-2, 6-0) built a 20-8 lead with an Alec Loehr traditional 3-point play at 9:31.

Later in the half, a Loehr layup made it 34-17 Midshipmen, but a Santi Aldama steal and transition dunk for Loyola got the Greyhounds within 10, 34-24, at the break as they closed the half on a 7-0 run.

Aldama scored the second half's first four points, and a three-point play at 17:38 made it a five-point Navy run as Loyola's run was then 12-0, but Navy scored the next six points and remained in control of the game.

After the 6-0 run put Navy back in control, the Midshipmen extended their advantage to 18, 57-39, on a John Carter, Jr., three with 10:15 left in regulation. Loyola chipped away at the deficit and got it back to single-digits on two Aldama free throws with 3:46 remaining.

Isaiah Hart would then make it a 65-60 Navy lead with a layup at 2:19, but that is as close as the Greyhounds would get the rest of the way.

Aldama scored a game-high 27 points and also had seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Hart tallied 10, a total matched by Cam Spencer in his season-debut. Spencer also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Jaylin Andrews just missed a double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds while scoring nine for Loyola.

Carter Jr. had 26 points for Navy, and Greg Summers added 20.

The teams meet again on Sunday afternoon, this time in Annapolis, Maryland, at 4 o'clock.
