Women’s Tennis Tops Hofstra, Men Fall 5-2 To Pride

BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland women's tennis swept Hofstra University on Tuesday evening, topping the Pride, 7-0. The men's team won the doubles point for an early advantage but fell to Hofstra, 5-2.
 
Kateri Martin and Abigail Thornton teamed to beat Mandisa Walle and Isabella Tonuzi, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles, while Julia Thompson and Brooke Santoriello beat Kayla Solangier and Simran Desai by the same score at No. 2.
 
Abby Decker and Taylor Kuncl were winners by defeault at No. 3.
 
In singles action, Martin held off Solangier for a 7-5 win in the first set before pulling away for a 6-2 decision in the second to score a point at No. 1. Thornton then dispatched Walle, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2.
 
Decker was a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Tonuzi at No. 3 singles, and Thompson beat Desai, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4.
 
Santoriello and Kuncl scored points with default wins at No. 5 and 6 singles.
 
Two men's teams won tiebreakers to propel the Greyhounds to an early 1-0 lead. Edik Pribitkin and Charlie Shanker edged Shan Jackson and Alvaro Lopez-Sanchez, 6-2 (2) at No. 1, and then Matt Cardano and Oliver Davey outlasted Giacomo Pezzoli and Guido Feldberg, 7-6 (10) at No. 2.
 
Hofstra's Jonathan Mahrt Guyou and Yusuke Nishitani beat Tyler Mast and Joe Ocker, 6-2, at No. 3 doubles.
 
Cardano was the Greyhounds point-scorer in singles action as he came back from a 4-6 setback in the first set to beat Pezzoli, 6-2, 7-5 in the next two for a No. 3 win.
 
Jackson defeated Pribitkin, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and Lopez-Sanchez topped Shanker, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2.
 
Mahrt Guyou beat Davey, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4, and Nishitani got past Mast, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. Wolfe closed out the flights with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Ocker.
 
The Greyhounds will be back in action Thursday, April 1 with a pair of non-conference contests. The men host La Salle University and the women take on Monmouth University; both matches start at 3 p.m. at the McClure Tennis Center.
