SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. –
Julia Thompson and
Matt Cardano both won in singles for the Loyola University Maryland women's and men's tennis teams, but the Greyhounds lost in a pair of Patriot League matches to Bucknell University with equaling scores of 6-1.
Thompson earned a super-tiebreaker win over Rachel Carroll, taking the opening set, 7-5, before Carroll won the second, 6-4. Thompson came back to win the super-tiebreaker, 10-4, for the Greyhounds lone point of the women's match.
Cardano extended his singles winning streak to six, also by virtue of a super-tiebreaker. Bucknell's Guillermo Torres won the opening set, 7-5, before Cardano took the second by the same score. He then won the point with a 10-8 win in the super-tiebreaker.
Cardano and
Oliver Davey nearly pulled out a win at No. 2 doubles for the Greyhounds, falling in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4) to the Bison's Tim Zelikovsky and Nick Mueller.
Edik Pribitkin and
Charlie Shanker lost at No. 1 doubles to Marwan Abaza and Cooper Bradsher, 6-1, and Michael Owens and Torres defeaed Loyola's
Benny Glezer and
Nick Haggar, 6-2, at No. 3.
Abaza was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Glezer at No. 1 singles, and Owen gained momentum from a tiebreaker win in the first set to top Pribitkin, 7-6 (5), 6-0, at No. 2.
Mueller beat Shanker, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, and Sam Yildrimlar edged Davey, 6-3, 2-6, (11-9), at No. 5. Per Astrom had a 6-2, 6-4 win over Haggar at No. 6 to close out the match.
Bucknell won all three doubles matches by scores of 6-4 in women's play. Cayla Koch and Daniela Bellini beat
Kateri Martin and
Abigail Thornton at No. 1, Sofia Ayuso and Tyne Miller topped
Olivia Tracey and
Anna Rico at No. 2, and Laurel Utterback and Kate Novak defeated
Brooke Santoriello and
Genevieve Wurtz at No. 3.
In singles play, Martin won the first set, 6-3, over Bellini at No. 1 before Bellini came back to win the match with 6-4 results in the last two frames.
Koch got past Thornton, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2, and Miller was a 6-2, 6-3 winner over Tracey at No. 3. Ayuso beat Rico, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4, and Utterback beat
Abby Decker, 7-5, 7-5 (5) at No. 5.
