Brandon Berry had seven birdies and shot a 5-under 67 on Tuesday to move up 15 spots, joining classmate
Evan Brown with a top-five finish at the Mountaineer Invitational as the Loyola University Maryland golf team finished fourth out of 13 teams.
Berry's round was the second-best of the 81-player field on Tuesday at the 7,308-yard, par-72 Pete Dye Golf Club as he moved up from a tie for 20
th after 36 holes to tying for fifth. Brown shot three-consecutive rounds of 1-over 73 to finish in a tie for third overall.
Brown's third-place finish was his third top-five out of four events this year, while Berry posted his second top-five and third top-10 finish.
Loyola shot 6-over 294, its best team round of the tournament, on Tuesday to finish alone in fourth place with a three-round total of 33-over. Host West Virginia won the event at 9-over, while Southern Mississippi was second (+21) and Georgia Southern, the 35
th-ranked team in the nation, finished third (+28).
Berry opened his final round by birdie-bogey-birdie on the opening three holes before rolling in a pair of pars on the fourth and fifth holes. He then went birdie-bogey, but that bogey would be his last of the day.
He had back-to-back birdies on the ninth and 10
th holes, and he then did the same thing on the 12
th and 13
th holes before stringing together five-consecutive pars to finish the day at 5-under.
Brett Inserra rode three-straight birdies from 12 through 14 to a 1-over 73 on Tuesday, putting together his best round of the season en route to a tie for 19
th at 9-over for three rounds.
Carlo Pizzano finished 65
th with a three-round total of 22-over, and
Turner Foster tied for 75
th at 29-over.
Matt Malits played as an individual and tied for 72
nd at 28-over.
The Greyhounds continue their spring slate next weekend when they head to State College, Pennsylvania, to play in Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate.
